I travelled the Indian-Pacific 4,500km from Sydney to Perth back in the 00s, which is a great trip. Obviously the centre of Australia has a fairly large dose of nothing, which makes the journey extra hypnotic.
Best stop was at Cook, population 2. It used to a be a fully populated town, complete with hospital and airstrip but is now a nicely eerie ghost town. The train basically just stops to fill up on water and for passengers to stretch their legs. You can literally just walk into abandoned houses/businesses like you were in Silent Hill. Don’t want to miss the train leaving however as you are in the middle of the desert and there are only three per week…
