on a train and can’t resist some hot takes. last you’ll hear from me i promise.
the pardon and the ban on lgbtq military personnell are bad, but this renewed afghanistan commitment is very interesting. most isolationist president in a century, easily, surrounded by hardline nationalists in the admin, and it only took 8 months for the military/arms sector to railroad the one decent policy he had. bannon and gorka out (i think this should be a ‘thank god’ moment but atm is it worth counting those chickens?), more distinctly hawkish voices trickling into the mix. it really is impossible for any president to avoid permanent war. the system just demands it, i guess.
oh, and there are shady doings afoot with venezuela too:
this sheriff is one creepy fucker. remember reading about him last year. there are already loads of cop organisers in militias like the ones we saw in charlottesville - wouldn’t be surprised if they start recruiting in earnest and tighten up wrt media training and discipline, trump’s remarks after charlottesville and the pardon are pretty much green lights for them tbqh. can see them operating mainly in more rural/border areas, maybe even acting as auxiliary paramilitary units during future protests. genuinely scary - think the minutemen/3% groups already help ICE out along the border with mexico, although this is supposed to be illegal.
