Yeah, it was one of HBO’s early prestige programming but was cruelly cancelled after a couple of seasons. It’s brilliant, really fucked up.

I’ve now finally watched Ghosts on iPlayer. It’s wonderful, isn’t it? It’s funny, but not in a nasty way, and the backstories of the Ghosts are often very touching - Patrick’s in particular. I might have cried a little at the wedding episode, too.

Am I right in thinking it was axed without any resolution/tying up of story lines? I really want to watch it but not if it suddenly stops. I think I’d be absolutely enraged, despite knowing it was happening.

Have watched all three seasons of Dark on Netflix. Takes a while to figure out the characters, and then the extra layers… I mostly stayed on top of it all, although by the end I have up trying to remember everything that had happened/was happening. I still really quite enjoyed it though. Am glad it wasn’t dragged out over more seasons though.

It’s been nearly ten years since I watched it but I’m pretty sure you are right, unfortunately.

Watched the last episode of It’s A Sin, felt a bit like a cop out ending to have something so explicitly apolitical close out the show. It has a character turn to camera and deliver a monologue about how homophobia is entirely just the actions and opinions of individuals. In earlier episodes it literally featured Tory MPs including Thatcher and it really didn’t turn its sights on structural issues at all, it doesn’t go for them. One of the protagonists who later on dies from AIDS happily says he supports and voted for Thatcher and there’s no rebuke beyond a bit of tutting from the other characters. It was a really good show, but it just felt like a let down to have it so determined to avoid discussion of structural homophobia.

I enjoyed it well enough but I started losing the thread early in season 2 and never got back on top of it. I was asking my wife “who’s that?” And “is that so and so’s mum?” Right up to the last episode. I just couldn’t store all their names and faces in my head

Yeah, I had to pause it sometimes to talk through who the people were (or who they could have been). I mostly got it by halfway through the second season I think, but new characters still kept coming which then unravlled that a bit. They probably could have kept focus ing at the same character a bit more often when they switched scenes, just to make it more obvious who everyone was. But was still pretty pressed overall.

I think that you can have some resolution through interviews with the creator after it was axed. And also if I remember rightly it might have been intended to be three two season ‘acts’ so you get the complete first act meaning there is some degree of resolution.

Could be totally wrong though as it was more than ten years ago.

Anyone got any recommendations as to which anime series on Netflix are good? Tried Violet Evergarden and just did not enjoy it. We liked Food Wars a lot despite some questionable elements.

Generally dont know much anime outside Ghiblis, but have also enjoyed Your Name, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Whiskers Away, and A Silent Voice.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is supposed to be good I think?

I’m not big into anime but have enjoyed Attack on Titan and Full Metal Alchemist

I know I’m 100 posts late to this but my partner is watching West Wing and it’s awful. The main characters are horrible, smug pricks and about 70% of the plots essentially boil down to ‘smug white man points out to woman/person of colour why the thing that they want is hopelessly naive’. None of the characters are anywhere near as smart as they think they are, and the show punches left much more than it punches right. The thing that surprised me most was that it was made in the nineties, when Clinton was president. I’d just assumed that it was made in reaction to Bush becoming president but nope, the show’s raison d’etre was literally just to point out how great it is that the grown ups are in charge.

Fucking despise it

Pat making peace with his killer properly choked me up. Have you seen the Xmas special? That got me good too.

Anyone have any recommendations in the vein of Ghosts and Detectorists? Need stuff like that to get through lockdown.

I’m assuming that you’ve seen Mortimer & Whitehouse Gone Fishing?

(I’ve not seen the Christmas episode of Ghosts yet - I was hoping to watch it this weekend. No spoilers!)

I haven’t actually. Had been meaning to so ta for the reminder.

If you like old guys gently ribbing each other whilst reminiscing, the recent Nightingales documentary is worth it for the relationship between Robert Lloyd and Stewart Lee.
