Still processing Fire Walk With Me after seeing it for the first time yesterday. I re-watched the final episode just before.

First of all, the final episode stands up as one of (if not the most) incredible hours of TV I’ve ever seen.

The film is clearly more of an unfiltered Lynchian piece, and is different in tone from the series. I can understand the criticisms I’ve read of the film that it is borderline sadistic, but ultimately the core story of twin peaks always was quite horrific - it just doesn’t have any charming/goofy stuff to hide it this time. I haven’t come to a proper conclusion yet, but like all of the most “Lynchian” Lynch films I’ve seen, even if the whole piece doesn’t quite hang together, it has some of the most incredible scenes, which hit harder than most.

Another thing about the film that I was thinking about was the ending, and I was wondering why I found it so affecting, when I probably wouldn’t have from most other directors - I think it’s because I don’t doubt Lynch’s sincerity. Anyone else I’d pass it off as manipulative kitsch nonsense, but Lynch has a way of making me absolutely buy into it.

I think that’s the main thing that gives me faith in this series. I believe that Lynch believes in it, therefore, well, anything goes.

I’m with you, pal. Due to the layout of this week, it would be really irresponsible for me to watch these (and I don’t want to watch them during daylight hours) until the weekend. But what a weekend that’ll be!

I think spoilers will be easy enough to avoid.

Hopefully.

oh, also, I’ve been relishing reading about TP for the last week or two, and now I’ll have to avoid these threads and places to be safe.

I might obsess over the Silent Hill 2 soundtrack to get that fix of eerie small-town America: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aalI-pmhgb4

My plan is to stay awake and watch the double episode and head to bed at 4.

So so happy to see something new directed by David Lynch. Inland Empire was a long time ago.

:coffee::cherries::owl:

Aye and he seems to have ruled out ever returning to film, so this is likely the closest we’re gonna get.

Havent got a single wink of sleep yet so might just be the double for me too

He’s not getting any younger either the old boy.

Same here man, it’ll be worth it though when we discuss these first 2 episodes very loudly and at length at the DiS meat tomorrow.

Aye

Gotta be honest, chances of me making tomorrow are pretty ruddy slim. Got a deadline at work so wont get there til late and i’ll probably be too dead

next week is a double billing of episodes 3 & 4 too; after that it’s a single episode per week. Still a 2 week gap between all the new episodes available tonight and fully brand new episodes, but not as bad.

Ah, that’s a bit better then. Can’t really complain with four episodes to handle over two weeks (can’t really complain with any rate of episodes considering just how unlikely this return was).

 Inland Empire’s quite the way to end a filmmaking legacy I suppose. I’ve poured over that film for 10 years and still haven’t figured it out. Who’s to say there’s anything to figure out.

I’m certainly going to try and make it but I doubt it’ll be for long on 5 hours sleep.

One time i watched it, probably my fourth or fifth watch and it all made sense and fit perfectly. Then i watched it again later and it made no sense again. Ffs.

Ha! I’ve seen it thrice but it’s been a few years since the last time so I’ll get on it again after Twin Peaks finishes. The Prince Charles are doing a full retrospective. Definitely want to see Eraserhead on a big screen.

I’m flagging so I’ve made coffee.

Who’s watching?

I am despite being up at 7am for work

I’m in. 15 minutes to go!
