A local cinema of mine (in Montreal) is showing The Return in full across 5 weeks. I went last night where they showed Eps 7 and 22 of S2, and then the first 2 of The Return. I watched everything up to S3 a few years ago, but have been putting this off waiting for perfect time and place, and seems like that moment has arrived! Loved it last night, can’t wait for next week. I especially enjoyed watching it with that great cinema soundsystem. The sound design and, of course, the music is amazing. Any tips or teasers of what to expect or how to approach it?

Roger that

Went to the third screening last night, episodes 7-10. Some midway thoughts: Really loving it so far, and I fully buy into it’s unique tone, and the beautiful marriage of different tones that Lynch often did so well, and was a key part of the original series. From a few episodes in I was impressed by how well it is able to make each storyline so intriguing, even though they can feel so seperate from each other.

Summary

Doppelganger Cooper absolutely commanding the screen, the Ruth Davenport murder (this is handled in such an interesting way, being such key part of Ep. 2 and then not revisited for so long). The Vegas stuff clearly is a major player in the whole story, and yet it’s still just dropping hints little by little as to exactly why.

Everytime Bobby is on-screen it makes me smile, and the first time we hear the Laura Palmer Theme is a moment and a half. There are too many odd, head-sratching scenes and raised questions to be mentioned here, and it would be against the point to agonise over each one. But two of my favourite parts so far have been some of the very surreal scenes:

Summary

The scene with the ‘blind’ woman in that box in space (even if that’s simplifying it, if you’ve seen it, I’m pretty sure you know what I’m referring to) was so trippy and mesmerising. As was that amazing, very Lynchian scene of Doppleganger Cooper and Ray (I think) driving up that road and then what comes after was just a classic moment. Waiting for the bus afterwards I heard two people talking about they’d been tripping during the screening, and thinking about that scene made me feel bad for them. Or maybe jealous I’m not sure.

There are some patience-testing moments of course, but the vast majority feel earned and feel like they come with a payoff, even subtly. That being said, and I’m sure this has been heavily discussed, but the

scene didn’t work for me at all. The fact it had to be introduced in that way just felt so jarring, and also the crowd seemed like they were being directed differently than in the other musical sequences. Not to mention the song was rubbish.

One final thought (of course there’s loads more I could bring up but I won’t) relating to the tone and writing. I respect so much how the pacing feels slow, and yet in each episode the audience learns so much and there can be so many revalatory moments, and yet it could never be accused of being rushed, and I’m sure many viewers would claim that it’s boring and say something along the lines of ‘nothing really happens’. I still can’t really get my head around how they achieved that balance. After each screening I think about it a lot throughout the week and look forward to Friday evenings so much! Will maybe give more thoughts when I’ve reached the end.

Has this been shared before? Just found it. Favourite bit is the rap about 2min 30 in. Is this Laura Palmer on a disco biscuit?

Wow, that breakbeat plus a mid song rap - couldn’t be any more 80s/90s decade bleed if it tried

I never watched beyond the first 3 episodes of the The Return and don’t think I’ve watched FWWM in about 20 years.

I see that two of the What is Music podcast hosts have started up a Twin Peaks one so I think I’ll use it as an excuse to do a full rewatch of what I’ve seen over the years to then lead into finally watching all of The Return.

these guys named Adam and Steve heh heh

I love the (I think?) Unspoiled format about a thing whereonly one hasn’t experienced the art.
