Ep 12:

Summary

Audrey’s return was disappointing. Poor acting on her part, I thought, and the narrative for the scene was baffling. Hoping we get some decent backstory on it next week.

Good to see Ben Horne appears to have become a much better person in later life

Enjoying every drop of Harry Dean Stanton. Didn’t expect him to feature that much as he didn’t exactly have a major role in FWWM.

The Dougie scene, I am fairly sure, was just so they could credit Kyle McLaughlin with every single episode of the season / show?

French lady hurry tfu pls

yeah she was poor, but anyone who’s checked out her post-twin peaks career knows that she aint the greatest actress in the world, and she isn’t really working that much nowadays. (though she was in the US shameless?) the whole scene was just badly done and went on for fucking ages.

is almost certainly in his contract, aye

Just cause I haven’t seen it brought up anywhere, re: episode 12…

am I the only one who thought the French lady was a Lil from FWWM style coded message? I thought it became apparent when Cole started talking when she’d left, and then I saw all those weird exaggerated gestures in a different light

Love this show so much

Episode 11 then:

Right okay.

fuck spoilers

We watched the first 30 mins of this on Monday night but then had to go to be as we were tired, so the final 25 mins were last night. The split was basically on the Jacobi point, which is unfortunate because without the momentum of the very good first half, the second half was incredibly flat, with only Audrey’s scene being of any note.

The main point I have to make before I dive into this is that I have zero idea how anyone knows the names of ANY new character. Like I have zero recollection of who’s who. I can recognise them by sight or refer to some by the name of he actor if they’re famous, but that’s it. (Barring Candi I guess!) This informs a lot of how this series runs for me.

Let’s get the shit stuff out of the way first then:

  • Jacobi. What is the point of his scenes? @ericthefourth said they all seem to have been filmed at the same time anyway and I really feel that now. Is it just so we see Nadine? I mean it just feels like a weird “Oh you wanted all the old TP characters back? Well here you go then” FU from Lynch to me. I would be interested to know if anyone noted something new we learned from this that we didn’t have from the almost identical sequence in an earlier episode?

  • The final chat at the bar. Really? What is this? As mentioned above, it’s a conversation mentioning a lot of names and I don’t know who any of them are. I don’t even recognise these women.

The good stuff:

  • I basically enjoyed every scene with Gordon in. Him and Albert in the room saying goodbye to the French woman was class. Enjoyed Agent Preston’s promotion. It’s interesting to see the whole Diane thing playing out and I totally dug the red curtain entrance for Diane there.

  • SARAH PALMER oh my god. Actually I didn’t recognise her at all in the first sequence and was half expecting her Turkey Jerky thing was going to be a fake out to run off without paying as they looked back, but the second scene was freaky as FUCK. Oh my.

The other stuff:

Audrey…um. Well I mean I didn’t love it because of course it told us nothing. Reading these Vulture and Vanity Fair pieces was also interesting:

because going back to not knowing anyone’s name, I naturally just assumed it was the same as EVERY OTHER CONVERSATION IN NEW PEAKS, i.e. they were talking about people I would recognise if they were on screen but I couldn’t remember their names. So it was interesting to find out you guys were all in the same boat and hadn’t a freakin’ clue what it was about.

I also didn’t mind the dialogue like those pieces did. To me it was totally part of how Peaks is meant to include a lot of melodrama.

Not sure about the character of Audrey being different. I never really liked her in the original series that much. (Sorry AH lovers.). To me she was always changing. She would act all scared and very young with Cooper and then go off and be vicious and manipulative to others. So for me she was always a highly evil and dangerous person. Here I just saw that play out as this being the person she showed to the man she’d married. She always seemed to me to play a different part to anyone she met, whatever role would get her the most power so I presume this “Willie from Temple of Doom” character was the one that gave her most power over her husband? I think if we see her talking to anyone else she’ll be someone completely different.

:joy:

Yeah alright, I mean she wasn’t Bob FFS, I mean as a normal person, not supernaturally so. I always found her to be completely amoral and dangerous

That’s her whole deal! She’s completely manipulative.

Yup, and I’m not a fan of this sort of person. I consider them be pretty fucking low.

in the original series she’s certainly capricious but her schemes fall flat on numerous occasions, it’s not like she’s a total sociopath. probably makes sense that she’s grown up to be kind of shrewd but i dunno, i kinda wanna forget that scene even happened.

It’s deeply odd. If there’s no margin given for her to act in any other way with other’s I’ll simply admit that Lynch’s seeming issues with portraying women and his supposed professional issues with Fenn have combined to do the audience and fans a massive disservice.

Think you’re reading a lot into one quite short scene Theodore.

their beef (if there was any beef) was partly coz of how she acted on set, and partly coz of things she said to the press after the fact. i find it pretty unlikely he’s pulled scenes of her out or changed the content of them or anything. audrey was never a central character, she’s not in FWWM coz she has no real place in it. there’s plenty of other characters who haven’t been in this much or at all either.

Well yes, but it’s all we’ve got and it’s the first scene in the new Peaks so I think it warrants some looking at, particularly given how iconic a character she is.

I mean I’m running off having read those two articles I posted, so if you think I’m reading quite a lot into it you should see how much they did!

I wouldn’t say she was amoral. She certainly liked to fuck people over, but generally it was people like the department manager who was certainly not a virtuous man. So to me she was like an agent of justice that worked in the world’s own skewed way. Of course I might’ve forgotten if she’s been straight up evil. And she certainly has her issues!

Here’s the episode ‘titles’ for the remaining episodes:

13. What story is that, Charlie?
14. We are like the dreamer
15. There’s some fear in letting go
16. No knock, no doorbell
17. The past dictates the future
18. What is your name?

haha, last episode title seems to confirm Dougie up until the end!
