Yes, that’s about right (and @midnightpunk) but it’s really more that there was a period when everyone almost everyone on the social board fit the stereotype of introverted indie kid who was ‘foreverAlone’ and mopey, hence a post where you mentioned your bf/gf/partner/husband/wife would get the jokey “thinly veiled: I have a XXX post” response, hence ‘the Thinly Veiled’ and further ‘the TV’.
Intrigued you think ‘partner’ makes it sound like she’s your wife since I always thought of it as specifically the term to use when you aren’t married. I like that it’s now become a dominant term.
It was very much TV made for now in an era when you were fucked if you didn’t set your VCR up.
My recollection of the FWWM background was that there were a host of timing and money issues. Initially it was going to be a sequel to tie things up (I mean obviously it’s Lynch so it wouldn’t have but hey) but then Kyle MacLachlan wasn’t available so he retooled it as a prequel but was still able to get some time with him? There was a rumour of loads of stuff filmed to finish off some S2 storylines that never saw the light of day, which I guess are scenes in the 3 hours cut maybe?
Anyway, I’d guess partly that Lynch is egotistical enough to assume that Lara Flynn Boyle would come back and when she wouldn’t (couldn’t is the actuall official line of course so…) he definitely still needed the character to tell the story so I’m not sure how else they could have done it.
(Be glad it wasn’t like the Gene Hackman replacement in Lester’s original cut of Superman II !!!)
