Track 4 (to be continued)…
Browsing a 2nd hand section recently came across this, bought without listening for Chuck Dukowski connection, this track really stands out.
Love Nomeansno (although they’re Canadian ).
I bought a Dead Kennedys record as a lad which had an Alternative Tentacles catalogue inside the sleeve. So good - basically worked my way through it as I saved money up and ordered with postal orders. Nomeansno, Alice Donut, DOA… Loads of interesting stuff.
I remember them covering Last Caress although not sure how I would have heard… But that is how I found out about them. A mates older brother then became our plug for their music - I believe I started with a Samhain album. God knows how people came across - and actually purchased - this kind of stuff back then.
Ever heard that weird nomeansno/jello album where its basically just him singing over nmn off-cuts?
Yeah, I bought that one! Not listened to it in years. He did one with DOA too which I never heard. Quite liked some of the Lard stuff with Ministry.
Yeah! Power of lard was a minor classsic (for me and my brother at least). Other ministry side project pailhead (with ian mackaye) was decent too.
Never heard that! Will give it a go. I kind of went off him a bit on the later stuff - he seemed a bit more spoken-wordy and his lyrics stopped rhyming. Really didn’t like Bedtime for Democracy.
Best Split ever! (could be a thread in that…)
Always feel like The Faith side gets a bad rep but its not their fault void are on the other side
American Hardcore? Think there was some talk of that in there…
Oh yeah. I never actually read that - is it good? I have had the film sitting in my to-watch pile for several years…
It is very good, but is a bit dense and by the end reads a bit like “and then there was this band who released a 7” and another band here who also released a 7"…but yeah, its great. SO interesting how it was springing up and networks formed, and then in other places similar stuff happened with little/no outside influence. Normally though it was a case of Black Flag came through town, played to some kids and then they picked up a guitar…
Sure it was the book with the Big Boys/Bad Brains beef in. I love the Bad Brains but man, another case of a band being given a pretty big pass for being well dodgy. Sure HR has softened/maybe apologised but still. (just ctrl+f’d their wiki for homophobia and nowt)
Iconoclast (not the ebullition one)
7 Seconds
Government Issue
Die Kreuzen (this is their first ep - its so good)
Jerrys Kids (the drumming in this is phenomenal honestly! so party)
Then Reagan Youth also…
(if you like this be careful not to buy the reissue which makes it sound like slick 90’s punk)
That Bad Brains pass only seems to have been granted in the last ten years or so. When I was at the peak of my love for this stuff in the 90s, the homophobia was the first thing that would come up in a discussion about them, and although the quality of the music was acknowledged, no one in my scenes really (publically, at least) really loved or listened to them
Yeah, that’s fair - when i was first getting into this stuff (late 90’s) it was more ‘known’ and talked about. I wonder why that is. I guess it was still a relatively ‘small’ scene and folks actually talked.
so much good music in here I got tired and had to stop clicking the heart button
For reference, I first heard Last Caress on an episode of Jackass (Minutemen too, obviously)
Also when you had bands a couple generations naming yourself after a famous lyric from an album ala Texas is the Reason then its probably safe to say it was influential
Honestly he was really consistent- the 80s stuff is very produced (think Don’t Tell A Soul) but the songwriting is there. Songs from The Film is probably his best 80s album.
After that he kind of settles into a GBV/ Lemonheads vibe. 10 Years After is probably his best from the second half of his career.
