Not granted a new license by Transport for London. 21 days to appeal

Yeah Uber are a bunch of utter, utter wrong uns and they should be banned.

Literally everybody I’ve ever met who worked for them including my old neighbour thought they were great, loved the idea of choosing their own hours (despite the fact it sacrificed all their workers rights), and in the current employment climate that still propagates outright racism let alone unbalanced opportunities a lot of immigrants feel like it’s one of their only options and tbh it kind of sucks this will obviously hit them hardest.

What I’m saying is the absolute boy needs to nationalise cabs


Didn’t this happen before and they just sorted it out? Nailed on they’ll wriggle out of it again.

About 2 years ago for failing to properly vet their drivers according to TfL requirements. They eventually accepted the requirements, changed their procedures and got a 15 month licence on appeal.

In a city with a frankly mind-blowingly good public transport network (London) this could only have ever been disruption in the negative sense. Out here in the Wild Wild West, with our radial bus routes and poor urban rail, I can see much more of a case for the business from a public benefit perspective. Obviously, because capitalism, this is the wrong lens to view it through!

Far too much emphasis is placed on disruptive change. I did an interesting interview a few days ago (obviously I can’t recount some details here because of confidentiality etc) between a change management specialist and a former government minister - the change management specialist had worked under various centrist governments and was a huge fan of disruption, technological disruption particularly, and absolutely raving on the aggregation of marginal gains etc. While these things obviously have a place in any change strategy, what the former minister noted at the end of the interview piqued my interest - they were uncomfortable with the notion of disruption, and thought that it would be more helpful to consider it in the context of transformation.

Also fuck uber.

In addition to this, my best mate has found Uber to be an invaluable resource - taxis regularly won’t stop for him (or even flip him off…) and when they do they’ll sometimes pretend their ramp doesn’t work so they don’t have to take him and fold up his wheelchair :triumph:

Whereas Uber is a revelation. We have never had a problem with their drivers taking a wheelchair at all. :woman_shrugging:


I mean, this is obviously excellent.

I think/hope any taxi apps that would have an option for wheelchair access as standard would be able to better accommodate him but absolutely, a lot of people with any form of disability or just anyone who feels vulnerable to flag down an unknown cab are going to feel left in the cold by this.


Oh for sure, with the strikes against them it was clear some of their workers hated how bad they are as a company and wanted change, I just personally never met any of them and even with my neighbour who wasn’t just saying it to be polite about his employer or something, I just know he’d be scared nobody else would employ him. It’s sort of a side point as they’re so dangerous they need to be banned anyway. It’s just a horrible employment climate atm.


That makes me really cross, but is sadly unsurprising. I think black cabs have been taking the piss for too long now. I’m not a massive fan of Uber and don’t use them very often, but when I do get one it is nice to not have to face racist ranting and endless moaning if you want to go somewhere off the beaten track or (perish the thought) pay by card.

I guess a better solution would be for TfL to modernise the taxi infrastructure so it’s more competitive with Uber and cabbies can’t flout the rules quite so easily.


Well in London it is. Disabled Freedom Pass for PT journeys and Dial a Ride for door to door.

Does England not have something like this? Public transport in Ireland is generally Quite Bad but there is at least free travel passes for over-65s and disabled people.

if only the city had a public transport system supported by spend seven times higher than the rest of the country

This really gets my goat. The number of Private Hire Vehicles cruising around London empty and slowing down public transport is absolutely criminal.


Yeah fair enough. But that’s a large endeavour and I think it’s hard to argue that efforts aren’t being made.

As for taxi drivers refusing to take passengers: that’s a breach of their license and should always be reported to TfL, whether you’re disabled or not.

To be fair to London bus drivers, I’ve not encountered them not stopping for disabled users for no reason. Only if the wheelchair area is full and they can’t fit on there.

The step free thing is definitely a huge issue. Also, the stations that are step free are often a massive ball ache to get about (London Bridge for example).
