UFO 50

Just posting a thread about this game now that it’s on the Switch, and now that I’m playing through it. I’ve played 20 of the games so far, completed a handful/cherries on some of them. Will see if I get around to posting about any of my favourites or most annoying ones at some point, but utter bargain of a game(s).

Will also just post the Dunkey video:

Cool games, been really enjoying playing these on Friday gaming nights with my mates

Glad you’ve seen the error of your ways!

Will slowly go through and add my thoughts of the games.

First five:

  1. Barbuta - oh boy. Lovely awful start. Too confusing to figure out where to go, happy to give up on this after a short while with no regrets.

  2. Bug Hunter - I should like this more, good ol’ then based strategy game. I managed one victory for a level, but it was a bit tough, and didn’t fancy continuing further. But maybe part of that could have been influenced by me still having 48 games left at the time.

  3. Ninpek - tough little side scrolling platformer. Didn’t grab me enough to want to get good at enough so I wasn’t dying constantly/quickly.

  4. Paint Chase - Ahh, the first game that I really enjoyed. Satisfying Splatoon style driving/painting game. I got up to level 23 and then moved on, but then came back after a while to complete it and get a Gold medal for it. Fun/tough, but a bit frustrating having to go back and do the beginning levels again in each run.

  5. Magic Garden - a Snake kinda game. I didn’t like it at first, one that took me a while to figure out. I went back to it just now and liked it more. My record is 39 Poppies, so a fair way away from the 200 needed for a gold medal.

Debating about holding off on this until the physical version comes out in the new year

I loved 2, 3, and 5. The first game sucks so much, why did they do that?!

Set expectations low, then everything else is going to look better

Really having to fight my natural instinct to not move onto the next game in this until I have made a decent dent in completing each one in order.

Currently enjoying/struggling game 21, but here are my next 5:

  1. Mortol - loved this. Had completely no idea what was going on, realising that you were meant/goong to die lots, but so many great moments and bits to figure out. I had to check a couple of bits online when I got stuck, or wanted to go back to a previous level to try and boost my lives count, but it was fun. Got a gold for this one.

  2. Velgress - god no. Brutal platformer, jumping upas high as you can, with sudden death following your every move, but every platform disintegrating if you stay on it more than a few seconds. Can barely last ten seconds (on a good run) without dying. Looks like I’ve reached floor 5, which didn’t feel far at all, but felt too much.

  3. Planet Zoldarth - a very shit 2d Zelda on a random alien planet? Just no fun. 0/3 map parts, and so it will stay.

  4. Attactics - I think this is my favourite of the games I’ve played so far. A sort of real time turn based game, with your Advanced Wars type sprites, trying to attack the other side’s based before they attack yours. This was my first game I got a cherry on, by completing the main game and getting over 100 rank in the other mode. I just kept coming back to that mode for just one more go. I imagine I’ll come back to it again when I’ve finished with the other games.

  5. Devilition. A puzzley kind of game where you place explosive creatures in different combinations to kill the demons so that the village isn’t overrun. I thought I’d like it, but I could never remember the exploding patterns of my creatures, so it didn’t feel satisfying. Looks like I got up to round 3 and then gave up.

Mortol is amazing/ingenious!

I have only just realised you can move your units backwards - game changer!!!

Liked this in the tiny amount I played it… but I don’t think I’ve got the reaction skills to get anywhere with it at the moment. Feels like a reverse Downwell.

Currently loving Warptank - satisfying puzzle-y platforming.

Can get pretty far into Campanella 1, but I don’t know if I’ll ever manage to get to the end. Reminds me of Gravitation (Net Yaroze game that was on a Playstation demo disc 300 years ago).

Only completed two games so far, Big Bell Race (did it first time) and Hyper Contender (also fairly easy).

Yep! I think I had completed it before realising that I could reverse also! I did think it would make me unstoppable, but then maybe it meant I faffed about indecisively a lot more. Definitely felt a little less helpless when I belatedly realised it though.

Of you fancy a UFO 50 challenge

Up to game 30 at the moment, so should post about some of the othera so far:

  1. Kick Club - a football platformer kind of thing? I quite liked it, but didnt persist with it much, but might go back to it some day.

  2. Avianos - never knew the name of this game! Completely confusing first load of goes. Tuen-based dinosaur game, praying to get extra powers. Ended up really loving it and completing it and getting the cherry, but was pretty tough.

  3. Mooncat - strange/fun controlled platformer, using the left stick to move left, and the right stick to move right. Often tricky to get past the normal muscle memory for games for this one. Have completed it once, but haven’t gone back to it to complete it another two times for the cherry.

  4. Bushido Ball - samari football/hockey? Found this a bit too frustrating and not too fun. Won one game and decided that was enough.

  5. Block Koala - puzzle game, pushing numbered blocks along to get to the exit. Did about 5 levels, but wasn’t enjoying it too much so moved on.

  1. Camouflage - this was a satisfying game of trying to get to the exit/collect items without being caught by the creatures, having to do a bit of thought to figure out which colours to change to and which routes to take. Completed this with the cherry/ all items.

  2. Campanella - hovering a UFO in a bubble, kind of ok, but found it a bit too frustrating boosting too much or too little and crashing/losing lives.

  3. Golfaria - I almost gave up on this very soon. I thought I just had to reach a hole with my golf ball, but that wasn’t a victory, I ran out of strokes, and didn’t know what was happening. Eventually found out that it’s a kind of almost Zelda golfing type game, and you get to keep your extra strokes/bonuses as from attempt to attempt. A bit confusing where to go at times, and I had to check online for some parts, especially for the final bits I needed to collect to reach the boss. A longer game than I was expecting. (No idea how much I played, as the Switch time keeping is busted on UFO 50, and keeps counting/adding all the time my switch is in sleep mode).

  4. The Big Bell Race - like @kram, I beat this UFO racing game first time. A couple of the races were tricky, but won most of them. Seems possible that I could go back and win all races for the cherry, but not sure I fancy doing so just yet.

  5. Warptank - decent enough puzzle type tank game. Found the overworld a bit tricky at times to know where to go. Managed to complete it, but think there are a couple of hidden levels I hadn’t found / which would give the cherry.

Just got this on the Steam sale.

Barbuta’s such a weird choice to have as the first game isn’t it? Like the devs wanted to deliberately troll you. Don’t appreciate it.

I read one opinion why it’s the first game, is that it (more than!) encourages you to move on to try some of the other games instead.

Saw some comments from people making their own maps to figure out where they should go… Felt too much effort for me though.

So far:

Bug Hunter - Theoretically should be up my street, in practice I can’t quite get the hang of it. Will keep chipping away at it to see if I can find the combos that make it light up for me.

Ninpek - Slight but certainly addictive. Has reminded me my reflexes are not what they were and has sadly but sensibly dulled my appetite for Hollow Knight 2.

Paint Chase - ‘Glossed’ over this one lol lmao, but Pacman + Splatoon is a fun enough concept for me to come back to it at some point

Magic Garden - First one to really get me. Really relaxing and addictive. Reminded me of many contented hours in the back of my parent’s car with my Nokia. I’m definitely going to be smashing that 200 oppies target and stick it up that witch’s nostril.

Mortol - Really good concept. Sort of like Lemmings meets Super Meat Boy. Haven’t quite the hang of it yet but definitely looks like one worth spending time with.

Velgress - Fuuuuuuuuuck ooooooooofffffff.

Planet Zoldath - Chip’s Challenge meets Zelda? I think? Putting this one in the Barbuta pile, i.e. the bin.

  1. Waldorf’s Journey - I’d seem this on Dunkey’s video, a Big Walrus almost golf type game, jumping and floating from platform to platform, avoiding waking up by falling in the water. Was fun, and had a nervy ending when I just about completed it for the win.

  2. Porgy - small submarine type game with various fish attacking you, and limited fuel/time each attempt. It’s tough. I liked it, even with the frustration of struggling to get a fuel tank and then head back to base. Lots of back and forth. Spent a long time on it, and apparently I’m still just 38% through. Have parked it for now, maybe I’ll return later.

  3. Onion Delivery - 2D Grand Theft Auto look alike, sort of mixed with Crazy Taxi. But it’s hard, easy to crash/lose lives. I got to Say 3 and that was enough.

  4. Caramel Caramel - very tough shoot 'em up. Didn’t get past the first level.

  5. Party House - I jumped ahead to play this one, and after initial confusion, I ended up liking it and it didn’t turn out to be as hard as I first thought. Managed to get the cherry by beating 5 random levels in a row.

  6. Hot Foot - some kind of beanbag throwing game at opponents. Gave up early on.

  7. Divers. First attempt was awful, not equipping any weapons. Later attempts weren’t much better, as I’d scrape a victory, go back to base, and repeat, bit feeling like I was advancing, so another early give up

  8. Rail Heist - cowboy sort of puzzle turn-based game. Kind of liked it, kind of tough. Go to day 3.

  9. Vainger - a metroid kind of platformer. A bit more generous compared to some games when you die and being able to continue. I gave up at 10% though, wanting to move on / maybe not sure where I was meant to go at that point.

  10. Rock On! Island - Ahh, I loved this. A tower defense game with horses of dinosaurs attacking your base. The last level was super tough, but finally beat the game. Maybe one day I’ll go back and try to beat all the levels without any lives lost (which I hadn’t managed yet).

  1. Pingolf - a 2D golf game, kind of fun, but seems too brutal on some holes where I just lost loads. Completed the round of it, but didn’t come first so doesn’t count as a gold.

  2. Mortal II - wasn’t expecting this game to come back! But it’s got so many different types of characters and powers nowz and it’s not as intuitive. Played for a bit, but didn’t make too much progress. Not sure if I’ll go back to it or not.

  3. Fist Hell - a Streets of Rage type game. But I bounced off Streets of Rage 4, so didn’t play this one beyond my first loss. But it seemed fine enough, just not for me.

  4. Overbold - a sort of sequel to the awful Velgress? You’re in a small arena with different enemies, which after beating you can then spend money on different power ups, and gamble for more money at the next level by adding extra enemies. I liked it, but it’s one of the white brutal ones where you die to easily. Give me more lives!

  5. Campanella 2 - flying UFO time again. Just bounced off this one early on, as I don’t like that floating mechanism, but not awful.

  6. Hyper Contender - a 2d one on one battle, trying to get enough rings from the other opponent, first to five. It was fine, I managed a gold win, but don’t intend to go back.

  7. Valbrace - an old school dungeon crawler, similar to what I probably had on my Gameboy or other small devices. I kind of liked it, but maybe easy to get lost in the dungeon. Decided to move on after my first death, but not bad.

  8. Rakshasa - 2d platformer - when you die you turn into a ghost, and have to attempt to collect a couple of items to return to life. Seemed fine, again I gave up early though / losing steam / knowing that Silksong is around the corner.

  9. Star Waspir - 2d shoot 'em up. Seemed fine, but didn’t want to try to persist with it. At least it was a bit more generous with lives

  10. Grimstone - a cowboy kind of RPG almost? I liked it, but wasn’t sure how long it would last, so I’ve stopped after a couple of towns, but will aim to come back to it at some point.
