Unpopular periods in a career you think are good

Was listening to Citizen and it seems the general consensus for them nowadays is that they’ve abandoned the sound which made them great and people aren’t keen on where they’re going but this for me is better than anything they’ve done

also said before but the best Trail of Dead album is Century of Self, don’t think they put out anything better than that album

Good question this.

  • It’s been reclaimed to some extent but Tunnel of Love is my favourite Springsteen.
  • The piano-y weirdness of Get Behind me Satan is the best White Stripes album.
  • The consensus seems to be that Okkervil River dropped off but their turn to more acoustic sound on Away is masterful and their best record for my money.
  • Infinite Granite is the second best Deafheaven album and only a tiny but worse than Sunbather.
  • Pop is U2’s second best record after Achtung Baby and they only fall off after

Stong agree on the Springsteen and U2 ones.

In a similar vein, i think New Adventures and Up are two of REM’s best albums.

I could definitely get behind that for New Adventures. Up I have never totally clicked with but may just need to give it more time

Not sure it’s unpopular per se, but I got into Mountain Goats in their mid-fi period (All Eternals Deck onwards) and that sound always clicked with me better than their lofi beginnings - despite my general lofi love

They’ve come round a bit in popularity but I’ll take cheesy jazz funk fusion Donald Byrd over the revered ‘hard bop’ recordings any day. Quite like his singing too

I like the stone roses second coming.

Quite like every post-Remote Part Idlewild album, especially Make Another World (tbf, there’s probably a few in there where I only like half or so, point remains)

I think not liking Solar Power is the niche opinion now. She really showed us all.

Probably their weakest era for me but still at least one banger per album

That middle section is still a bit clunking and I think was probably what put everyone off so much to begin with. But agreed, 1-6 and the last two are right up there

I admit this may be a bad take but I actually go to Our Love to Admire over either

Reputation has the most cohesive and satisfying through-line of any Taylor Swift album (not to say that makes it better than the others, but it does make it a unique listening experience in her oeuvre), and apart from Endgame which is horrible, all the songs are that vintage Taylor Swift :goat: pop songwriting that you love, but with a different flair. Take Endgame out from it and it’s a way better album than 1989, a true step up from what she was doing before in every sense.
