XTC - Skylarking (Playful, melodic and impeccably produced pop-rock tunes about growing up, falling in love and dying, with 60’s influences and humourous, sometimes sardonic lyrics)

good kid, m.A.A.d city

Soundtrack to a non existent film about a kid who falls in love, gets caught up in gang beef and avoids being dragged further into turmoil and potential death thanks to the advice of an old matron and the support of his parents just in time to be offered a life changing opportunity.

Andy Shauf’s entire post-2016 discography.

The Party (2016) - all takes place at a house party

The Neon Skyline (2020) - one night at a bar, guy’s ex Judy comes back unexpectedly

Wilds (2021) - Vignettes from the relationship with Judy from the last album

Norm (2023) - guy called Norm is infatuated with a woman, believes he’s been guided by God, ends up abducting her. Told through the POVs of Norm, the girl’s ex and God… Actually, that one does sound pretentious!

Leaders of the Free World tells the story of a man getting over a broken heart, especially if you take the title track as being the first time he notices there’s a wide world out there

I’ve seen a number of Greg Dulli albums labeled as concept albums and none of them are pretentious.

The Afghan Whigs - Gentlemen
The Afghan Whigs - Black Love
The Twilight Singers - Blackberry Belle
The Twilight Singers - Powder Burns

Not sure if all actually are concept albums, but they’re all 10/10s regardless.
