Update for eggs coming soon apparently

What’s the cold water test tilty?

So just get like a Pyrex jug and fill it with cold water and then drop the eggs in one by one. If they sink (even if they’re on their end) they’re fine to use. If they float bin them immediately coz they’ve gone! There is science involved… Basically the older the egg the more porous its outside becomes allowing in air which forces it to rise.

This is excellent knowledge that I will definitely use. Thanks!

One of those things my mum taught me as a kid. Has been invaluable over the years!

I wonder how the first mum ever discovered this

Love this thread’s lack of tags.

On the same lines but easier. Just shake it next to your ear, if it’s a dud you can hear the yolk rattling about in the shell, if it’s good you won’t. No need for Pyrex and water

When I was at school, a kid read the second sentence without the comma (in a Lancashire accent). Seemed funny at the time.

Depends on where you live. It’s not necessary in the UK but it is in the US, for example, due to how they are treated, AFAIK.

What you egg
