Couldn’t figure out how to put golf emojis in the title so here we are. 3rd major of the year upon us, live from Brookline, MA. Lots of talk about the Super Golf League (LIV) this week putting a dampener on things. Who do we like?
Going with Rahm back to back here. Rory is great form and will throw some cash Will Zalatoris way for a top ten finish. Weather should be good. Anyone going to watch?
Rory is on great form and would love to see him win a major again. Fitzpatrick has been playing very well indeed of late and believe he won the amateur championship at brookline so he’ll be feeling confident.
Thomas has been on great form and Will Zalatoris record in majors the last few years has been great. Sam Burns in another who has been playing some good golf and is due to challenge on final day for a major.
Rahm and Scheffler should be making charge i’d think.
Will be interesting to see how it plays out off the back of all the LIV golf pish going on.
LIV stuff is fairly mucky, although I don’t mind Mickelson being made to squirm. The amounts of money are completely mind-blowing. Neither Mickelson or Bryson are denying that they are making north of $100m just to play, and the rumour is that Tiger was offered something heading towards $1bn to turn up. It feels like some big names are taking the cash, but when you look at the list of who’s actually there it’s gigantically underwhelming. Big paydays this week for hennie du Plessis, Oliver Bekker and JC Richie, not even household names in their own houses.
Interestingly Rory has dug himself in extremely firmly on the other side, and it’s the reason I think he will actually win this week after so long without a major. Usually I steer well clear because he usually flashes too late and his odds are always short. He’s in good form, bombing his drives but his added motivation this week is what will push him over the top. Maybe.
Rory said the other day - it’s not all about the money, but how is a sportsperson supposed to motivate themselves to compete, when they know they’re guaranteed a hundred million quid even if they shank every ball into the pond?
Other side of the coin is that on the other tours (pga, euro/dp, kornferry, womens toursetc), there are players desperately trying to climb up leaderboards so they can just pay their bills. Surely there’s a happy medium.
This is what I think will sink it eventually. There will be no drama, the product just won’t be worth watching unless they can dramatically improve it. It’s already telling to me that Poulter, Garcia, Westwood and Mickelson were respectively 12, 13, 15 and 17 shots off the lead in a three day tournament, up against no-names.
There’s no substance to it, and they can’t keep giving $100m to each big name pro to turn up.
He three putted the previous hole, not joking when I say that when he knocked it in, no-one clapped and one person coughed loudly. Rewound it to make sure, so awkward. He looks completely miserable and out of form, don’t know what his LIV contract requires him to do for his $200m but I don’t think they are going to get their money’s worth.
