It’s been said a lot but the gap between these people’s rhetoric and how they react to the consequences of acting it out is really stark. They understand that they were trying to overthrow a government, right? The fact they aren’t currently being bulldozed into a mass grave marks them out as incredibly, remarkably lucky human beings. And yet they act as if nothing bad could ever happen to them personally, and that if it does it’s some monstrous, barely believable injustice.
Something often said around socialist circles is that revolution is impossible in the US, because Americans will not put a shared, highly dangerous cause above their own personal liberties in great enough numbers, they all regard themselves as millionaires, temporarily embarrassed or otherwise. But the MAGA hardcore have built a gestalt where they delude themselves into thinking their personal liberties are not at risk, because they are right and good and have always lived lives largely free of consequence, and the right and good people in government will guide them and keep them safe. And so they throw themselves into these insanely dangerous situations eagerly, never fearing death, because in their minds they cannot die.
And the thing is, they aren’t even wrong about people in power supporting them! Half the police have bought in on this shit, who knows how many in the military! That’s why they let them in! Jesus christ, imagine if a power hungry general with enough levers to pull and two braincells gets ahold of them. Shit’s doomed.
