First Zoolander cast member etc.

A hug from an orange man? I’m confused

Is it just the politicians saying trump is naughty or does it mean anything?

I’m sure it isn’t isn’t good.

It’s another jam for him to effortlessly wriggle out of.

So far it’s like almost everything else in Trump’s life - he’s got caught doing a bad thing and has been told off for it. However, it remains to be seen whether his current streak of not actually suffering any consequences holds true.

Just don’t really know what it actually means, he can’t be president anymore or just like oh we are holding an inquiry

He’s already been impeached once before this. What happens now is he’s effectively put on trial, and if the trial convicts then he’s chucked out. But it won’t, and he won’t be. Also, he’s just going to use this as evidence for his wolf-hat base to say, ā€œThe DeEp-StAtE are trying to stop him!ā€

If the senate votes for it too it means he can’t stand again in 2024, loses his big presidential pension and has to pay for his own security for the rest of his life

Also you know how everyone still calls ex presidents ā€œpresident bushā€ or whatever when they address them - would Trump just be plain old Donny Trump?

It’s basically the house of representatives voting to charge him with ā€œhigh crimes and misdemeanoursā€ and put him on trial in the Senate

Of course last time the Senate, controlled by the Republicans, declined to listen to any evidence and just voted to let him off along party lines

Yes, that’s the worst part of the punishment

They should put a special clause in his that means that you HAVE to call him ā€˜Dickhead Donny’ in all communications henceforth

The House proposes it, and they’ve just voted that they agree it (Democrats have a majority there). It then gets passed to the Senate, who are supposed to hold the trial, and it has to get 2/3s of Senators to vote for it to get through. But it’s split 50-50 Dem-Repub there, so it’s less likely to happen.

Also the setup is really unfair- Representatives in the House are like MPs- they represent a district with so many people (even if some of the deciding of districts is really corrupt). So for example California has more Reps than Montana, because California has 40 million people and Montana has less than 1 million. So California has 53 seats in the House and Montana has 1. Democrats usually have the majority here because they are popular in the places where people live.

However in the Senate, every state has 2 Senators, no matter how big or small. This gives the Republicans an unfair advantage because they can get senators for rural states with hardly any people, and they get a higher representation than the democrats with less voters. This is also why they’re against Puerto Rico and Washington DC becoming states. They’d get senators too then, and the people in those places will pick Democrats (also very large black and latino populations in those places)

I think the most significant thing right now is that it splits the Republican Party

It might also offer Biden some leverage to pass bipartisan legislation on economic stimulus, covid & so on …or it might be a barrier to bipartisanship

though, once again, the split in the Republicans will probably be enough for Biden to get the few votes from across the aisle that he might need to shore up his policies

I like the sound of ā€œconvicted felon, Donald Trumpā€¦ā€

Apparently an amendment in 2013 changed that one - he’s guaranteed it regardless.
