Loveless - my bloody valentine (except I scanned it and discogs says it is unofficial and I wouldn’t ever be able to sell it there (not that I would)) - is this common? Had no idea dodgy vinyl was a thing?
Bootleg vinyl was very common in some Manchester record shops about 10 years ago I found. Ended up with some proper shitters. Dodgy bootlegs have always been a thing. They used to print Western pop songs on x-ray paper to smuggle into the Soviet Union back in the day.
When we were teenagers my best pal bought a (bootleg) copy of Loveless on eBay and ended up getting contacted by mbv’s manager for details etc. who then confirmed it to him. Didn’t know it was a thing at all ofc. Was just before they did all the represses and m b v came out - think that record in particular has a history
The Frank Ocean bootleg market is its own economy. At this point people on the internet have even coined a name for these bootlegs/fakes “yessir” some have even turned up in the big independent record stores.
Yeah, other big ones I know of (as I want an OG copy) Them Crooked Vultures (should have bought at ‘only’ 50 quid, and also Alice In Chains MTV Unplugged. Even these boots go for a fair amount…when people know what they are too.
The only bootleg vinyl I own (to my knowledge!) is also My Bloody Valentine. Bought You Made Me Realise second hand for about a tenner years ago and realised it was worth £200+ when I added all my records to discogs. Was agonising about selling it when I double checked everything and realised it was a knock off.
Emailed the shop and the guy is happy to exchange.
Once found a copy of Levitate by The Fall in one of my local record shops for a very standard price even though it was long out of print and going for huge sums online, couldn’t believe my luck, but looked into it via Discogs and Fall forums when I brought it home as it seemed too good to be true and turned out it was an unofficial version. But it plays fine (other than being maybe a little bit quiet) so I didn’t mind and kept it, there was no other way to own it at the time without paying silly money for an original (though it was eventually reissued a few years later)
That shop always has a bunch of vinyl bootlegs like Radiohead acoustic sets or Arctic Monkeys live at Reading etc, don’t really know where they come from or who presses them.
Which shop is it?
I got Levitate 2nd hand nice and cheap from Mono, also while it was out of print and incredibly expensive, but to be fair that was the cd version so I have no place mentioning it in this thread.
Dragon Records in Belfast. Great little shop that mostly sells second hand stuff although there’s quite a lot of new sealed stuff in their racks these days too
I think the only bootleg/unofficial release I have is this one. Not sure it’s a bootleg but it is unofficial according to Discogs, blocked from sale.
Ah cool. For some reason I thought you were talking about Glasgow cos that’s where ShinyMcShine had been. I’ve been thinking about a visit to Belfast at some point though so will stick this on my list!
