One huge plus in the ‘potentially move to Taiwan with my wife in the future’ column is how close it is to Japan. Absolutely loved it when I was there.

Well worth a watch.

The faintest of praise

Make sure you eat sandwiches from 7-Eleven or Family Mart. Seriously, their supermarket sandwiches are something else.

Drink coffee boss from vending machines. Rainbow blend is the best. You’ll find this stuff everywhere.

Edo Open Air Architecture museum is good

Would just get the onigiri over sandwiches.

Think that’s in reference to him having more YT subscribers than poor ol’ Mick.

Can’t it be both?

Miso soup. Looks innocuous, sometimes even has tofu in it, but you’ve got to be careful. I have a range of Japanese phrases about being vegetarian I can share if they’re needed (although @wileycat could probably do a better job)

It’s ghibli tastic!

I recall having a mangled stab at asking a waitress if the food I was interested in ordering contained meat to which she replied ‘No, no. No meat. Just pork’. :+1:

I just used the happy cow app.

I think there’s also a app you can scan barcodes and it tells you if its vegan (not sure how well it will work in Japan).

I think you just have to do yer best.

There is (I know from my sister-in-law’s family trip) a Harry Potter world thing out there too and as my 6.5 yr old daughter is massively into HP this may be something that matters.

What I will say is that a week is a short amount of time when you’re also dealing with all that jetlag. Like having done back to the UK and out to Aus twice in a few years it’s definitely extra tough with a kid that age. She took at least 4 days each time to adjust. I was about the same because of her. When you’re on your own you can just sort of power through, drink to excess or whatever.

So you’re taking the older kid I’d look at a longer break if you can (I realise that is tricky as you probably only have half-term) but also don’t forget when you get them back again you’ll be in the same situation in reverse.

I’ve just landed in Tokyo! How nice to see this thread. I been here a number of times before but still I’ve seen a few things here in the comments that I wanna check out. So yeah, you won’t run it of things in a week.

I agree with @xylo about Kyoto. I’d had my fill of shrines by the time I’d visited there so didn’t do much for me.

There is a blogger i used to follow about 10 years ago who is obsessed with japan, if you search up cheeserland. She has really niche but amazing recommendations and seems to have visited literally every prefecture in japan, i know if i ever go ill study her website in detail

If you’re thinking off the same thing as me, it’s Universal Studios Osaka - a fair way from Tokyo. Nicely put together, but you’re talking 3-3.5 hours each way, even with Shinkansen.

Ooh right, I must be I guess, cheers

YES! Despite it looking like absolute shit, I cannot recommend the egg sandwich enough:

Must be appalling for saturated fat and that, but just power through and eat them.
