Any of you Japan-heads reckon you could go there as a vegan and actually be able to buy food while out and about or do they not do that there?

Probably doable but would need some pretty good language skills / translation apps if you plan on getting street food in outlying bits. Planning where to eat ahead of time would be the preferred option.

I survived as a vegetarian pretty easily. You might find it’s not that different for vegans, as the Japanese don’t eat much dairy anyway (one of their derogatory terms for Westerners is that we smell like milk), but you’re (probably) not going to be able to check the ingredients list in anything so mcnulty gif.

There were a few vegan cafes around when I was there (loved the PETA one in Shibuya) and I don’t suppose it’s got worse since, but relying on them will limit your travel options, and the cost will stack up.

Question about Takoyaki

Does it taste eggy?

Unfortunately I don’t like the taste of egg (although I’m fine with it being in cakes and stuff).

I wouldn’t say so.

A load of stuff is made with dashi stock, isn’t it? So fish flakes and kelp. You get the vegan version with just the kelp, but worth watching out especially with otherwise vegetable looking dishes, especially soupy stuff @Konichiwa_Bitches

Want to go to Japan so much. Anyone want to take me?

Love this

Figure out a way to get me on a 12 hour flight and you’ve got a deal.

Only ever been on a London :arrow_right: Paris flight* before so that bit is pretty daunting to me too :grimacing:

*I guess Paris :arrow_right: London also.

20 mg?! 6 makes me feel like my legs are made of concrete. But also that that’s perfectly fine.

One huge plus in the ‘potentially move to Taiwan with my wife in the future’ column is how close it is to Japan. Absolutely loved it when I was there.

Well worth a watch.

The faintest of praise

Make sure you eat sandwiches from 7-Eleven or Family Mart. Seriously, their supermarket sandwiches are something else.

Drink coffee boss from vending machines. Rainbow blend is the best. You’ll find this stuff everywhere.
