Went for a week’s holiday in Yorkshire in 2014 when my daughters were ten and seven years old!

We stayed on a working farm that rents out a separate farm house about half an hours drive from York. Was great cos my two got to help herd sheep etc which they loved.

We spent two days in York itself (the rail museum is much more fun than you’d expect, honestly) did yorvick twice (as well as the ride there are archaeologists who love chatting to history nerd kids). City walls are fun to walk and there are a million places to have a nice coffee /hot chocolate. Climbing the Minster tower is great too.

Also spent a day in whitby which is just a brilliant town to hang out in and again loads of great places to eat and drink. Did Fontaines Abbey too, also fab.

Loved it so much we haven’t been outside the UK for our holiday since 10/10

this. gordale scar and janet’s foss are a stones throw too, for even more waterfall action. spoilt for choice for nice walks round there, there’s also decent pub grub to be had in Malham itself half a mile down the road

Did ny moors couple of years ago. Stayed in a holiday cottage near pickering. Riveaux abbey/ cycling in dalby forest/steam train to whitby/day trip to york/flamingo land.

Was great.

If you do visit York I would advise avoiding the weekend. The city is over-run with drunken stag and hen parties pretty much every weekend which can make it unpleasant. If you’re up for a week come midweek.

This. We went to York on September and did Monday to Wednesday, getting the late train home so we had 2.5 days in York . Worked pretty perfectly and I had a great time.

Sort of this, although I find if you steer clear of the area immediately between the station and the river/just the other side you should be ok. It’s what I’ve tended to find anyway! No doubt it’s better and quieter all-round during the week though.

Scarborough is nicer than it’s given credit for, and has plenty to do. You can combine it with Whitby/walk between the two if you have the energy. If you’re used to coastal stuff it might not have quite the same novelty though.

Leeds has got some free museums and plenty to do, but might not be as fun for children your age. I’d buy you a pint if you came to Leeds (although again, might be a hard one to sell to the kids haha)

Hijacking thread for a reminder that anyone who fancies a stay on the edge of the Moors is welcome any time so long as they don’t mind energetic dogs and a bit of damp. I now have a Golden Retriever puppy, proper broadband, and should be being central heating at some point. Spaniel can’t really be in a house with young children unfortunately, but if I have enough advance notice I should be able to offload him for a few days. Golden pup is a bit giddy but otherwise fine :slightly_smiling_face:

seconding what a lot of people have said, jorvik viking centre is properly mega and you should go see yorkminster while you’re there. the national media museum in bradford is excellent for kids, loads of classic animation stuff in there as they host an animation festival every year. also bolton abbey and yorkshire sculpture park are great days out. huge fan of YSP

We went to York in September - it wasn’t too bad but then we did most of our city sightseeing in the morning and we were at the football ground by 2.30ish. It was pretty lairy round by the train station afterwards though.
