Maybe he was married to an actual shrew and could no longer bear the shame of his rodent bestiality.

Is Archway a detective and would’ve solved the murder?

Will Archway’s murder make his wife’s murder seem less suspicious - as it’s part of a group of killings?

Was he expecting Archway to be dead before he killed his wife?

Why the fuck am I getting involved in this? I have loads of work to do.

incredible

had archway witnessed the basils together at wherever they were driving back from, which would compromise his plan in someway?

Is Archway an accessory in some way? The supplier of the murder weapon?

Maybe Archway was meant to be his alibi or something. Ice knife.

Did his wife tell him on the way home that Archway would be coming over that evening?

He must be an unexpected spanner in the works in some way. Otherwise Basil would not have to change his meticulous plans.

Oh, does he need Archway’s corpse at the scene for some reason? He was going to use someone else, but then Archway got a bit smug after thrashing them at bridge, so he fired up the ice knife and took his sweet revenge.

were they at dinner together and archway casually mentioned how non shrewish the wife was, thereby signing his own death warrant

He planned to frame Archway for killing his wife - and attempting to kill him. He’d invited Archers over for dinner after the theatre, but he pulled out, saying he’d rather be at home.
So your man had to swing by and kill him up and bring his corpse over to stage the scene.

CASE CLOSED.

Archway isn’t a detective but he could have played a major part in the solving of the murder.
