walk me through your ideal picnic

Ideal you say?

Plenty of shade to sit in but some sun for those who like that sort of thing too
Tasty ipa and some posh sparkling stuff for non drinkers (eg my wife,)
My wife
Some other cool people maybe
Absolutely no sandwiches: lots of picky bits (mainly veggie) samosas, cheese straws etc
Cold grapes, strawberries etc
News coming through during the picnic that the tory party has fallen into a buffy style hellmouth and that universal socialism has been declared forever throughout the UK somehow.

Also preferably alone, with the curtains drawn. Hopefully it’s raining.

Picnic a la rich-t

Location: Nice park or a meadow by a chalk stream or summit like that

Eating: just picky stuff, no plates. Stuff like posh sausage rolls, feta and herb filo parcels that my mum made for my wedding, bag of kettle crisps, punnet of tomatoes, punnet of strawberries, baguette, cold meats and some picky cake snacks like millionaire shortbread bites and rocky road bites

Drinking: a wanker beer or 2 if not driving. If driving a blood orange San pele

Everyone is free to byo drinks wise

enjoying the tomatoes being a linking salad throughout many choices. firmly here for that. probably plum/cherry/baby tomatoes for me as it’s hard to find bigguns that don’t just go berserk when you bite in

Just fuck loads of savoury pies: pork pie, game pie, gala pie, quiche, sausage rolls, scotch egss, spanakopita, borek, pasties. patties, empanadas, baozi

Up a big hill.

Some unassociated dogs to come and investigate over the course of the meal.

Some vine ripened cherry toms from my mates dad’s old nursery would be perfect (Eric wall in Barnham, sussex tomato fans). Nothing better than a fresh tomato in a picnic setting

Tomatoes
Cheese…normally brie and cheddar
Apples
Big bag of crisps
Strawberries
Little non melty cakes/cookies
Bottles of drink

Knife for cheese cutting

Sit and enjoy.

Needs to be simple and not all fussy stuff wrapped in cling film or produced from boxes. No sandwiches. A nice platter of picky bits is my ideal. Pork pie, cheese, cold meats, crusty bread, olive, dips, boiled eggs. Just have the cheese and meat smushed onto the bread. Probably wouldn’t even bother with a pudding other than some nice fruit.

stubby beers
GG’s veggie haggis sausage rolls
olives
like a whole baguette per person
wheel of brie
mushroom pate
one boiled egg
a wide assortment of crisps (for pudding) but no salt and vinegar
some strawberries (for second pudding)

as long as it’s sunny and on grass and I’m with my pals I don’t mind where we are. that being said I would like somewhere where there’s a bit of buzz and I can people watch, no need for tunes or anything like that

nice weather, 22 degrees and sunny with a nice breeze in a garden would be my preference.

Typically tends to be a park which I’ll tolerate but I really do not feel comfortable with dogs in the vicinity while I’m sitting on the ground with food, makes me feel super vulnerable - but also, I hate being on edge about them eating the food. Stay away from me!! Stay away from my food!!

Definitely a picnic mat. would prefer a cushion because it’s uncomfortable sitting on the ground for ages. speakers are good, card games are good.

food - one of the few cold, grain based salads i eat would be lovely, but realistically all the salady things that people bring will be hideous to me, so bring on a load of sausage rolls, feta/spinach pastry parcels, a charcuterie board, ice lollies and some carrot batons with hummus as a sop to nutrition. Might eat some fruit if it’s there but I’m not bringing it because I don’t care about fruit

drink - ideally it’s cold, freshly squeezed lemonade, but I’m also happy with a chilled fruit cider

trying to remember the name of the nicer park in TW. dunorlan?

did a picnic the other week and my friend brought sandwiches on some stale sourdough (maybe? I don’t really know what sourdough is but it was weird bread) that I genuinely thought would break one or more of my teeth

Depends on your definition but Dunorlan would be the last place I’d go as far as TW parks are concerned - it’s such a trek compared to the other two. For vibes I’d always go for Calverley Park (especially as it is a few mins from a mini Sainsbury’s), but for convenience, Grosvenor and Hilbert Park is very close to me

oh yeah you have to drive it obv - just in terms of nicest park i reckon it was the winner

Might be the most correct answer possible to give to the question “What sounds good in theory but is usually quite bad in reality?”

A lot of pasties (like a bin-bag full or so)
Big bag of S&V kettle chips
Big bag of sweet chilli & sour cream kettle chips
Pork pies
Cocktail sausages
At least 3 cheese (to include brie and some kind of smoked cheese)
Babybels (mini)
Scotch eggs
Baguette
Pate of some sort
Pork scratchings
3 bags Haribo
Couple of those tubs of mini flapjacks etc
24x Devon Red ciders (330ml can)

Sunny but not too hot, about 15 maybe. On the cliffs near my house is nice for a picnic so there.
