idk if I’ll ever be able to get a whole kit, but I’d love a snare drum at least
I have no idea where to start, though
in this thread, I hope the drummers of DiS talk about their drums

I’d reeeeally like to learn some New Orleans second line snare, and just any other complex snare stuff
just bloody love some snare, m8s
I’m not a drummer but I’m trying to learn how to. I got a good deal on a Gretsch Catalina kit and most my actual drummer friends are complimentary about it. Sounds decent with the limited bit of recording we’ve done with it too.
oh cool, how much? what does it include?
A used Yamaha stage custom.
As with all Yamaha stuff, it ain’t cool, but it is definitely great, and (via local adverts etc) cheap.
I’m already a convert, what with my acoustic. I’ll have a look into that
if it sounds good and is good value, it’s very cool
As with loads of this stuff, so much of it is voodoo. The drummer in my band plays a really beatiful 80s Ludwig eagle kit, and it sounds and looks awesome, but I reckon a 90s export would sound awesome with him playing it.
I have owned a 60s Slingerland, a 90s Yammy Stage Custom and an 80s Tama Swingstar kit. None cost more than £200, and all sounded ace.
The Tama kit (Japanese version) is a potential/unfashionable bargain.
well I was going to add earlier that I feel much less picky about drum sounds than e.g. guitar tones
I mean, I’d probably adjust the rest of the music to go with the drums, and I’m not really that keen on being super-picky as far as very specific individual drum sounds being necessary for specific genres
I’m definitely leaning towards drum sound hinging more on technique (which is always going to factor in tuning & etc) than most other instruments
I’ve been researching snare drums, and good god I hate it when people talk about a ‘fat’ snare sound
no!! snappy, dry, brittle snare sound.
Got a Gretsch Energy kit, total bargain, looks and sounds great and I love it- although the snare is not quite as good as the dirt cheap snare I picked up years ago for pennies.
Have been playing for decades and it was only recently that learned that most snares can be made to sound at least reasonably passable if you learn to tune them properly, and use two keys to do it.
Got myself a lovely snare!
Any good gift ideas for a drummer’s birthday present? He teaches and plays in a big band and does some wedding band stuff too. Big into Stewart Copeland. I’m looking at something around £20-30
Quite difficult I think.
One of those plastic ‘wood’ blocks, or a cowbell? Hot rod sticks are fun, although maybe already uses.
Fancy drum key and a nice key rjng?
Cymbal felts are always useful as they dissapear but a bit boring.
Some loop experience ear plugs?
A seed shaker is a really nice thing that the drummer in my improv thing uses quute a bit; £30 ish.
He teaches percussion in school so has a lot of more unusual drums and things. Not heard of Hot Rod sticks, I’ll take a look at those and drum key, thanks!
