I lived in Brisbane for two years and Australians get tapas completely wrong to an obscene degree… but they end up being pretty fantastic in their own way. It just means a small plate of anything - usually with absolutely no connection to Spain, or even Europe. A huge number of restaurants do them though and they often end up being where the chefs will try out more exciting things on a smaller scale, so you can order loads of smaller plates and if an experiment falls flat it doesn’t matter.
It’s fuck all to do with (wonderful) Spanish Tapas, but it’s still pretty sweet.
