it isn’t always the eater

Thank you.

Just want it known that I chew with my mouth closed and don’t knowingly inhale gulps of air while eating.

I definitely get paranoid about whether I do it when I’m eating with people I don’t know very well

my son has this condition (although it does seem to be getting better recently)

Every so often I catch him throwing this irritated glance at me though. I try to ignore it cos he cant help it

That’s interesting that you’ve identified it. Well done.

we have a book and everything!

It does seem to be getting much better of late though

The worst is sniffing - he cannot stand it if one of his sisters has a cold and sniffs, The irony is that he is a terrible sniffer himself

except when people are making noises with their mouths?

Sorry guys but…

Some people with respiratory or sinus problems find it actually impossible to eat with their mouths closed the whole time if/when they can’t breathe through their nose. Would you rather they suffocated themselves trying to eat?

As long as they do it out of earshot of me, sure.

Noisy eaters eating at the same time as me? Fine.

Noisy eating when I’m not eating no? Oh God, no, get me away, I need to leave the room sorry.

Sadly my coworker is both a noisy eater and an exceptionally slow one too.

Food tastes better when you open your mouth a bit. It’s like how wine tasters intentionally slurp to help aerate the wine and improve the flavour.

It’s still horrible to do in company, but on your own, give it a shot, chomp away like a monster for the best possible eating experience.

I follow the correct protocol but still am a loud cruncher
Not really sure why or what i can do about it. Sometimes suck my food a bit first

So much this. I’ve developed quite a phobia of eating in restaurants etc as I’m convinced everyone’s just repulsed by me. (Admittedly if I’ve had a couple of beers they may just be right.)

Have you all considered wearing earplugs when out and about?
I do it sometimes and it can be quite calming

No one has ever mentioned it to me before but my gf hates how I eat, she’s mentioned it easily 20 times by now. It’s not slurping or anything though, apparently I chew too loudly or enthusiastically?

Anyway, regardless of the specific problem, always weird to be told you do something “badly” when you’ve spent your whole life just assuming what you do is perfectly average…
