I start my birthday countdown in earnest.

I’m actually spending this one fighting the patriarchy within a local organisation that have really got my back up about inequality but that’s coincidental to IWD occurring.

Glad I’m not alone in thinking so. Gonna have to think of a diplomatic way to suggest as much…

I’m going to take a nice relaxing day off from babysitting the men of the Countdown world.

Slightly off-topic, but while it is true that Kenya is one of the top 5 wealthiest countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, that wealth is concentrated in the hands of very few people.

Thanks. Have also found this article which, as I expected, suggests one of the biggest threats to local production is… second-hand imports!

Oh my word, just checked their accounts and the charity orchestrating all this nonsense spends £800k a year (and receives £900k in donations) of which only £200k goes on its charitable activities. Shoot me now.

Have bought my wife one of these (props to @Scout):

This thread has made me realise I should be doing more though.

only woman I know really is my mum so Ill be extra nice to her today

Every day is (International) Women’s Day in my house. Mrs FC and I have two daughters and a son - we try to make sure that i) our girls know that they will be able to do anything a boy can do to at least an equivalent level, ii) our son knows to respect girls and not to treat them differently to his friends who are boys, and iii) all our children are aware that where the world is now (which is by no means perfect) is substantially better than it has been, and only through centuries of very hard work by long suffering women. Not a big fan of ‘days’ to be honest, I would prefer to think about these issues as matter of course (seems more constructive).

Many women I know went on strike last year, so I’ll be spending tomorrow helping to facilitate that.

(Sorry this got a bit long).
It’s my girlfriend’s birthday so taking her to dinner [e.g not really anything].

Per the original post, there don’t seem to be any big marches or similar events. The Green Party had organised a women’s cycle ride but it got cancelled due to the weather (it did say all welcome, even if you didn’t have a bike, so I was considering running with them).

My work organised something, but it was called something like ‘Balance’ and didn’t especially mention women. It had 6 speakers, three of them were men and only one POC. Unless there was some LGBT energy there that I don’t know about, I’m not wildly impressed. They also scheduled it before work, so anyone with kids would have had to rejig their usual schedule in order to attend. Yay for white-washed diversity initiatives! [They’re trying, bless their hearts, but they are so backward that I could give better D&I lectures than the ones we get - and plenty of people here on DiS could give much better ones]

Pretty sure if I mentioned IWD at my workplace (where I am one of only two women) the response would be eye rolling followed by some fun mansplaining.

GBOCs

Getting through the day is probably as much as I can manage right now. Will try and remember to do the minimum and donate to Women’s aid or something though.

Hope everything goes well for those who are more involved with campaigning/events. x
