Britart entered the mainstream with the ‘Sensation’ exhibition at the Royal Academy in 1997, which displayed the contemporary art collection of Charles Saatchi at the time.

However, Tracy Emin was already an established artist, who had had a solo show at the esteemed White Cube gallery years earlier, and Damien Hirst’s work had been shown at the ICA and the Serpentine Gallery before Saatchi started to collect them.

My point was that the values increased artificially after Saatchi started buying all their stuff, not that they were unknown artists before he got involved

Most artists need a patron to sustain their career. Da Vinci had the Medicis, JMW Turner had Walter Fawkes, Van Gogh had his brother, and the YBAs had Charles Saatchi.

Yeah but that’s what I’m saying - the fine art market and the value of art is dictated by rich collectors who in turn get even richer when the value of the art they bought increases even more.

this reminds me that my dad thought he had some special beers kept to one side after he was bought them for his birthday or summat one year, dunno why he thouhgt they were special but anyway we were out of beers and going through their drinks cabinet at christmas a couple of years ago and were like dad why are these in here and he was like oh theyre special and it was like a bottle of spitfire or bishops finger or something that went off two years ago :smiley:

I had a load of homebrew at the back of a cupboard from about four years ago. Didn’t want to risk drinking it so I poured it down the sink. Smelled incredible though

Luckily (or not I suppose) a lot of these collections don’t actually amount to much. If it is new boxed Marvel action figures or whatever, give it twenty years and Ebay or equivalent will be saturated with them. It is the old stuff that no one thought about keeping that is worth money, and that is why it is worth money.

That does sound good. Can you remember the name of it? Wouldn’t mind having a look.

There was another thing on Radio 4 a while back about counterfeit wine that covered a bit about those secure storage houses. All pretty bonkers.

The documentary Sour Grapes on Netflix is all about wine fraud and it’s excellent. Shows how much of the industry rests on trust and bullshit, because who can even reliably say what a 60 year old Petrus should taste like?
