Britart entered the mainstream with the ‘Sensation’ exhibition at the Royal Academy in 1997, which displayed the contemporary art collection of Charles Saatchi at the time.
However, Tracy Emin was already an established artist, who had had a solo show at the esteemed White Cube gallery years earlier, and Damien Hirst’s work had been shown at the ICA and the Serpentine Gallery before Saatchi started to collect them.
