I am admittedly quite emotionaly delicate at the moment, but did not see myself welling up at Coyote, but well up I did.
I had so much fun with this - the joke density high, carried out with so much love. To think we nearly didn’t get it! Even the silly adult jokes were good (“He’s not sitting down, will this be a problem” had me unexpectedly hooting).

This was fine but really hits you over the head with its themes to the point that it becomes a bit grating. Also my bike got stolen during it so I can’t score it any higher than 3.5. Cunts.

My Heart Is That Eternal Rose (1989)
Underseen HK gem from director Patrick Tam, a melodrama of doomed romance in the Triad underworld. It’s beautifully framed, lit and shot throughout (Christopher Doyle was one of the cinematographers), has some strong action sequences, and stars Joey Wong and an impossibly young Tony Leung - what’s not to enjoy? If Wong Kar Wai had directed The Killer.

Is it worth a watch? Had it on Firestick for a bit and put it on my list cause its Almodovar but also I cant really be arsed
It looked great but definitely not peak Pedro. But it’s interesting to read it as Pedro being very self-critical of himself as director.
I just didn’t find the story within the story compelling and it meandered quite a lot.

Loved the vibe of Camp Miasma, loved the soundtrack, the production design, the performances, and there are two particularly wonderful scenes (one involving a zoom call), but as a film it didn’t work for me. It’s just a bit too knowing and self aware and nod nod wink wink. I was really hoping it’d tell a compelling story, but I’m afraid it is almost entirely built on vibes.

Not sure if there is a thread for old films? but I just watched SLC Punk, had seen pictures/clips of Mathew Lillard with blue hair and was intrigued so tracked it down. I dont think it was a good film but an enjoyable one, loved the 90s-ness of it (think technically set in the 80-s but still), lots of familiar faces james duval, devon sawa, jason segel. know if I had seen it when I was younger I would have really liked it, in the way I did empire records or the first few kevin smith films. not sure how accurate a depiction of the american punk scene it was, were mods vs punks a thing in america, even in the uk it was mods vs rockers wasn’t it? Ending was disappointing as well turned out to just be a phase.

As August draws to a close - September thread tomorrow, please film goons - we watched Edge of Tomorrow (on Netflix) and it’s still a great fun film. I’d actually forgotten how funny a lot of it is, something which makes it work: as a pure po-faced actioner it would have just felt self-important.
Anyway, a fun watch, especially if you can’t stand Cruise because of what his character goes through.
