thought The Secret Agent was good, very good really, but it is a bit flabby to be truly great

i thought Sirât was incredible. really ticked all my boxes tbf - my pithy Letterboxd one liner would
be it felt like Claire Denis directing Sorcerer. also i am just a sucker for a descent into hell film, which i sort of expected this might be from
the first ten minutes but the first half is restrained whilst being incredibly compelling. might have to go back and watch it at the IMAX just for the soundtrack alone but there are stunning visuals throughout as well. also ffo: Climax imo

wasn’t completely sold on If I Had Legs I’d Kick You. I liked it - it’s a bit surreal, a bit funny, a bit stressful, but none of those things fully took off or went up a gear.

Did enjoy the hamster scene a lot though.

I’ll add last year’s Things Will Be Different to this list. Two siblings lie low after a robbery in a farm safehouse that’s hidden by a time loop.

The writer and director was editor on a couple of Benson & Moorhead films and the whole thing has very strong B&M vibes.

Oh, they’re actually credited as executive producers.

First Cow - another beautifully-paced counterpoint to the traditional Western. Always a pleasure to see Toby Jones show up too. Consider me fully Reichardt-pilled now.

Have to say the trailers put me off Project Hail-Mary a bit. I guess the thing is that I think The Martian is fun movie but it too-cosy a story for any real stakes so it lacked that edge. And this really comes across similarly.

Slight spoiler: There’s hardly any peril in the book despite the high stakes mission. Grace is a genius who can simply solve anything.

Yeah, I figured this was more an author thing TBH.

It’s more the huge praise thing that I feel I won’t likely be in on. That said it’s also exactly that sort of film that gets hit up for best picture, TBF.

Molly VS The Machines - Saw this last night. It was just as infuriating as you’d imagine it to be. Can’t imagine the amount of composure her dad must have having to confront such ghoulish, empathy-free tech bros on a daily basis. The way the film itself is constructed is a little unusual, and I’m not sure it will work for everyone. I would have liked to have seen more of Molly herself and her life, and it tries to weave together a lot of threads which I’m not sure it is entirely successful in doing. Definitely worth a watch though.
