A Thousand and One- Great film. Captured me throughout. Wonderful backdrops of tough living in Harlem. Heartfelt, brutally real for Teyana Taylor’s character, should have been nominated for an Oscar for her performance. It’s gut wrenching, various relationship issues, heartbreaking and heartwarming all at the same time.

My May Bests:

Polite Society
Cinema Paradiso
The Nice Guys
Spotlight
Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret
The Five Devils
Ladybird
Blackhat
Red Eye

best: my dinner with andre, the insider, thief

worst: ghosted (doesn’t exist)

Hypnotic had a trailer which made it look absolutely off the wall and would be a great laugh - unfortunately the best bits are in the trailer and it takes itself far far too seriously. About 25 minutes in they open up the film to a wider conspiracy and it gets proper lost in it. Shame

It’s so fucking bad. I did actually fall asleep before what I assume was a later twist of some kind? because I was very confused when I woke up at the end. But what I did see was painful in absolutely every area. When she’s explaining hypnotic powers! Quite impressed they kept it together in that scene. One thing I did like was the way the bad guy ran, like half-squatting for some reason?!

They try do about a twist a minute in the end. The funniest bit was when Affleck was running away from everyone and they frame it like he’s high up and going to jump out a window and it cuts to the exterior and he just jogs out

Bahaha, yeah, so much of it was baffling. Rodriquez is usually reasonably solid no matter how bad the material is, but this was shocking. Can’t believe it got a cinema release.

File it as: “Ant didn’t get it” rather than “Ant thinks its bad” I think.

Tried to articulate why quite badly but I think it boils down to it feeling trite with 20 years of similar stuff since it came out when it was probably more seismic at the time or something?

Like judging a non-contemporary period piece that is making a social comment to a contemporary standard or something, I dunno

watched probably my favourite film so far of the year, Reality. bout the interrogation and arrest of a translator who leaked documents about Russia tampering in the election to a news website. The whole script is taken verbatim from the transcript of the actual interrogation. It’s properly compelling - Sydney Sweeney is incredibly good as the lead

May Diary. Another month where I failed to hit my 2 a week target.

I’m sorry, my friend. I’ll probably revisit in a decade and realise what an idiot I am

Nice one mate, Julianne’s crying
