Three from Glasgow Film Festival last night, in order of preference:-

Nirvanna The Band The Show The Movie (2025)

The allure of fame and how it can lead to isolation from those that you love.

A comedy about a struggling band and their schemes to get booked for a gig. I lost count of how many times I laughed out loud, hilarious throughout (more so at the start and end), I loved it as a fan of the series and my mate loved it without knowing or seeing anything from them. It's a silly story, they know it, but they make it all work. The credits felt abrupt, could have done with a short palette cleansing skit before or during them, regardless I'm so glad I got to see it in a cinema, especially that opening act.

Verdict: A highlight, loved it
FFO: The Ballad of Wallis Island (2025) and The Climb (2019)

The Good Boy (2025)

A reckless man seeks escapism gets kidnapped and begins to see his actions from other people's perspective.

A held captive film that can get a little preachy, à la Heretic (2024). A great cast put in a solid performance that held my attention right up until the end, I just wasn't sure about the ending as it didn't seem right for the characters and felt like it leaned too heavily in an unhealthy direction on the discipline and nurture themes.

Verdict: It's alright, worth a watch
FFO: Good Boy (2022) and Good Boy (2025)

My Daughter is a Zombie (2025)

The sacrifices taken for a child in complicated circumstances and the burden of guilt of the choices made.

A light comedy horror about a zombie outbreak and it's impact upon a happy father & daughter duo. It's a bit of light fun, silly with a few good scenes, made me laugh a couple of times especially the cat, granny and friend characters, but it goes too long for about 30 minutes.

Verdict: It's ok, easy to watch
Better Alt: Maggie (2015) and Bones & All (2022)

MMotM seeing the drone shots in Landmarks on a massive screen

Very poor month from a numbers perspective. Moving house is so shit in so many ways.

MMotM was enjoying seeing all-round shitbag Shia LeBeouf getting increasingly annoyed on-set in Megadoc

35 seen in February.

Best: Probably Avatar: Fire and Ash.
Worst: One Million AC/DC (1969).

MMotM; The jaw scene in Primate.

Some slight mental health blips and consequent sleep troubles mean I haven’t watched that many films lately

Best: Meek’s Cutoff
MMOTM: The reveal in Peeping Tom when you finally see his full setup

Anyone seen The Moment?
Watched it last week and would give a strong 4/5. Laughed the whole way through. I’m not someone who is usually that keen on mockumentary-style humour but this was so well done.

Watched Man on the Run over the weekend. No real interest in McCartney’s post-Beatles music, but thought it might be quite interesting from a historical perspective. It was a little more negative/critical than I was expecting from a film that the subject had helped produce himself - and that was obviously welcome. Some good bits of the farm - always get something in my eye when i see footage like that, particularly seeing the pets and stuff. A more intense intimate focus on those early years after the breakup might have made for a more interesting watch - it sort of just repeats itself quite a bit when it gets to the mid to late seventies. I don’t know if I feel like I know all that much more about him now after watching it, other than it sort of reinforces the idea that he wanted to be away from it all but was also clearly still very desperate to be admired, which artistically lead him down one or two very naff paths.

I really enjoyed it! Lots of laughs. Might see it again but I imagine it’ll be on streaming soon

Appears to have vanished from cinemas near me pretty quickly. Annoying!

i dont think ive ever had less opinion on a film than Hamnet. was just there for the whole thing

Not sure I will ever recover. Those last 15 minutes are going to haunt me.

just watched All That Jazz at my local bioscoop
quite bored of sleazy men (no offence) but the third act is so good it’s undeniable
love watching people dance on the big screen in any case
great one line cameo by Wallace Shawn

Finally got round to seeing The Secret Agent, which has been out here in Brazil since November.

Great bunch of faces (should win Best Casting at the Oscars, if nothing else), and the ending is fantastic. Pleasantly surprised it’s doing so well overseas as it’s such a profoundly Brazilian film, warts and all. Can’t wait to watch it again.
