I didn’t do this, no
Watched: 34
Best: Sinners, Flow,
Worst: The Vampires Night Orgy
MMOTM: Hailee Steinfeld’s “We gonna kill every last one a ya!” from Sinners.
Also, waiting for Flow to start and discovering I was in a screening of A Minecraft Movie.
Zero stars is not an option sadly.
A plotless hangout film where you don’t want to spend time with any of the characters is an issue…
Watched Eephus this morning, THAT is how to do a baseball hangout film
so pumped for this! shame it didn’t get a proper UK release, did you watch it via nefarious means?
Afraid so
fine by me brother, i won’t tell the lads from chapo trap house (i will be doing the same)
might be coming out? hmm probs an archive page for a previous festival release, nvm
yeah it played at LFF as well but i totally missed it. similarly Friendship is out next week in the US and still has no sign of a UK date
Off to catch a screening of Chunking Express after work. I also haven’t used my Mubi ticket for Sinners this week, so if I feel up to it I might take my last chance to see that later in the evening too.
Brick
Hated this in 2006 cos I was young and didn’t get it. Kinda hate it in 2025 cos it’s wank
Picked up the Criterion version of that last week. Haven’t seen it in about 15 years. Mint film.
So good. I’d not seen it before so didn’t know what to expect, but it has a very charming tone, lighter than the others of his I’ve seen.
No one asked for Another Simple Favour but it was a surprisingly punchy and enjoyable 90 minute film, completely padded out to the point of becoming a chore to over 2 hours. A lot better than it should have been whilst at the same time being more tiring than it should have been
I watched Drop last night. Absolutely ridiculous, but in that good way that I kind of enjoy. Reminded me of Non-Stop, Phone Booth and that bizarre Grand Piano movie that Damien Chazelle wrote before doing Whiplash and La La Land.
Clearly not high art, but exactly the kind of silliness I expected from such a premise, and exactly the kind of film I wanted to watch half-cut the night before a day off. I also liked Happy Death Day, so Christopher Landon knows exactly what he’s doing.
Did you ever see the HDD sequel? Had a lot of fun with that too
Another quiet film month for me but managed to watch three goods:
Sinners
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-verse (r), and
Fast Times at Ridgemont High
MMotM: the two amazing music scenes in Sinners
