What Films Have You Been Watching? July Edition

Was quite excited for this, would have hoped for a better review but clearly doesn’t sound bad

It’s intentionally over the top and does silly well but probably spends more time sending up 80s films than being its own thing.

Nonetheless it’s a fun no brainer and probably more fun if you’ve a few drinks inside you.

Lovesong is a proper lovely and brief queer drama, really adored the ending. It leaves mubi tomorrow, well worth catching.

The Tomorrow War is off to an awful awful start. Looking forward to hate watching this.

Just finished this, it turned out alright in the end I thought, after expecting to hate it. 90s sci-fi horror homage with modern special effects and Richard Splett from Veep.

Watched Apocalypto with my eldest last night. Sure it’s a deeply problematic film on many levels (I mean it’s directed by Mel Gibson) but damn it’s a great watch. So many superb performances and the pace, especially in the second half just doesn’t let up. The temple sequence is ludicrous in the best possible way. And the ending…ooof.

Watched All About Eve for the first time last night. Been on my list for a while, unashamedly because of George Sanders who could possibly have the greatest speaking voice of all time. But that could be biased due to my love of The Jungle Book.

Great film!

Watch Transit next

Yeah Shiva Baby is really good. Glad it was so short though, couldn’t have handled much more of it. Thought the sound design/mixing idk was incredible.

Just finished this and had similar sentiments. I really enjoyed Machiavelli the grumpy cat but I’m easily amused.

some good stuff in channel 4’s india film season…
so good to get back to satyajit ray with mahanagar, felt contemporary. actor playing the boss was harry lime-y, must have had a ball playing him.
eeb allay ooo! was a good twist on superhero tropes.
pinki elli? reminded me a lot of asghar farhadi. strangely, was reading alice ash- paradise block on the same day as watching, which also features a missing child called pinki/ pinkie…

thought the father was great and not really down with the ‘but you could tell it’s a play’ downplaying of it, if only for that roving camera in the circular talking about him scene, which ended where it started. can’t get more cinematic than that, for me

Had a double bill in the cinema today of Nobody and Freaky. Had a lot of fun.

Freaky is great. Vince Vaughn is so good in it

Watched a couple of good ones over the last week.

Most notably A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night, Fear Street Part 1 and Lake Mungo.

A good bunch of films tbh. Enjoyed watching all of them, all quite different too. I’ve gone into Fear Street in a bit more detail on the horror thread, probs will the other ones too soon.

Tonight I’m watching Love And Monsters as a online watch party with some friends, so far, so OK.

Yeah you can tell he was having a great time with it. Shame he’s such a bell end isn’t it.

Glad to see another Indian film fan on here!

Charulata (also on Channel 4) was pretty wonderful as well, though sadly not available anymore. I love his patience in bringing out the relationships of the characters and their inner worlds, and it’s a beautiful look into the writing process.

Went to the cinema and watched Nobody (2021) with my partner. Nobody else was there, and it was a pretty terrible film. Just by the numbers brainless action.

On a much more positive note, I watched Songs My Brothers Taught Me (2015) on Mubi and was absolutely blown away. Melancholy, heartbreaking and beautiful.

Never seen it but read the synopsis on Wikipedia and it sounds dreadful. I’ve seen the other 5 Terminator films though.

Went to see Another round and it was as great as everyone says it is. Mads must be the coolest actor on the planet right now.
