Pom Poko (Netflix) 4/5
:raccoon: A joyous, bonkers, thoughtful and extremely self reflective environmental fable…pretty much encapsulating everything you want / expect from Studio Ghibli. Such a tough watch at times with the heart, quirks and plight of the Raccoons and wider natural world shining through. It manages to cover areas, thoughts and conundrums rarely (if ever) discussed in film and does so with so much charm and poise. Perhaps the most underrated Studio Ghibli film i’ve seen so far.

Last Action Hero (Film 4) 4/5
:ticket: A great premise dripping with excess and deliciously meta with everyone wonderfully aware and having a blast. I watched it with a giant grin and gutted it wasn’t part of my rotation as a kid/teen. Not entirely sure why it needed to be 130 mins.

Triangle (Horror Channel) 3.5/5
:passenger_ship: Reminiscent of Cube in its inventive low budget feel, it too also veers a bit into TV movie territory along with some ropey CG, but rather glad I stuck with it as the twist just before the hour really hooks you for the remainder. The back half is laid out exceptionally well with the placement of all the pieces slotting together at the perfect moment with some cool imagery dotted throughout.

What did you decide in the end? Is it all in his mind?

Yeah I didn’t see it for years after it came out because the reviews were very negative and obviously JURASSIC PARK but it’s a clever film that deserved to do a lot better. Just a shame it suffered at the hands of Hollywood execs rolling the dice like that.

It definitely is too long, though. Seem to remember a lot of the charm wears off in the final section. Still

Ha ha

watched Saturday Night Fever last night, knowing nothing beyond the soundtrack and the outfits. Way grittier and more dramatic than I was expecting, though it was really great for the first hour, hour and a bit. Lost its way a bit in the last 30 mins though; the fact that a rape and a death happened and neither really affected the ending at all beyond making Travolta miserable pretty much undermined the point/value of including either of those things in the plot. Just made it all several degrees darker than it needed to be or than it had earned the right to be.

But still, looked amazing, really engaging for the most part, banging soundtrack, Travolta was magnetic, and I really liked how they didn’t have any sort of triumphant victory at the dance competition

At The Devil’s Door - Possession horror film. Liked it and disliked it. Some good creepy moments but others were too much like a TV movie and it was all a bit muddled. Starred Ashley Rickards who I liked in Awkward. 4.5/10.

Bunny Loves You - A shit British comedy horror where a teddy bear kills people. I could only take 15 minutes of it and had to turn it off. 1.5/10

Faith Based - Comedy (apparently) where two slackers decide to make a Christian film to make some money. I was expecting some cynicism from one side or the other but turned out to be a wishy-washy film and was pretty pointless. 3/10.

The History Of Future Folk - Indie film where two aliens (who look like humans) go to Earth to take it over for their own species but end up liking Earth due to the presence of music. A lot in the same vein as Flight Of The Conchords. Good but nothing special. 6/10.

Just watched Peter Strickland’s feature debut Katalin Varga. Good film, if a bit dark and horrible. Absolutely wild that he just decided to make a film in Transylvania without knowing the language.

Thought Ray & Liz was quite great extremely bleak but never punches down at the subject. Thought the first act with Tony Law managed to juggle being sad, funny, horrifying, tense etc perfectly . ā€˜White Dee’ from Benefits Street is in it at the end and is surprisingly good

weirdest line ever that

in fact one of the weirdest/worst films i’ve ever seen tbh. horribly racist, terrible dialogue, laughable cgi.

So many films. How would you narrow it down?

He suffers a lot in Edge of Tomorrow and Magnolia, if that’s a helpful start?

Just read what happens at the start of Cruella

The Wolf Of Snow Hollow - Jim Cummings stars and directs where he struggles with alcohol and parenthood whilst trying to solve a bunch of murders where the suspect is probably a werewolf. Good support cast with Robert Forster (in his final role) and Riki Lindhome (of Garfunkel and Oates).

Inevitable similarities with Thunder Road as Cummings is again a policeman with personal issues. Not as good as Thunder Road but passed the time and it’s a short film at around 75 minutes. 6/10.

To Tokyo - A British horror filmed in Japan. Florence Kosky is living in a rural part of Japan trying to overcome a traumatic event in her live and is told by her step sister that her mum is dying and to head to Tokyo for a flight home.
The film then gets arty and allegorical as she’s drag into the wilderness at night by a monster and has to travel across various Japan landscapes to Tokyo. She puts on war paint and various monsters are in slow pursuit.
The film doesn’t explain anything and leaves it for the viewer to interpret things how they like and that’s fine. Unfortunately it just didn’t work for me. The lead didn’t have the skills to pull it off and despite being a short film I got a bit bored. I can appreciate though that it was trying to achieve something different. It’s ok for me. Might be other people’s cup of tea as reviews were favourable. 5.5/10.

Yes Day - Jennifer Garner in this family comedy. She and the youngest kid were pretty good but the film’s a bit too saccharine even for me. 5/10

When A Stranger Calls - 70s TV movie with Carol Kane. Saw it many years ago. The start of the film has probably been imitated many times with the babysitter getting a call asking her ā€œHave you checked the children?ā€. Excellent beginning but then turns into a standard elusive baddie film. Still not a bad film. 6/10.
