Many albums have 15 or more tracks and albums with much less are spread across 2 or more vinyl records. Is it when the artist specifically states that it’s a double album? Does it even matter in the days of streaming?
Think it would be for the best of we just declared that an album has to be 8-12 tracks and 30-60 minutes in length, anything shorter is an EP, and anything longer warrants a custodial sentence.
What about 5 tracks and 50 minutes?
Yeah this. Got to have some intention behind it, either some conceptual split or giving lots of music in order to show a range they can’t on whatever they’d normally release
An abomination
EP.
Lets just try to keep tracks between two and five minutes long.
It’s for the best.
I simply will not
I’ve always known that ‘Blonde on Blonde’ was a double album but I was only familiar with the CD. I’ve only recently discovered that all there is on side 4 is one track, admittedly it’s a great track but that’s a lot of getting up to flip your record over.
Not much, what is a double album these days with you
i guess it’s gone back to how it was in the 60s/70s in that an album that won’t comfortably fit on a 12" at 33rpm will be split into a double - so like 45+ to ~80mins?
It was obviously a bit different for a bit in the 90s, when 80mins albums could easily fit on a single CD and that was the dominant format. Find it weird how long Modest Mouse albums are in retrospect.
I’ve noticed that 17-22 minute releases called albums are more common in streaming-times, which means theoretically Earl Sweatshirt could announce a 40-minute “double album” and it would make sense.
I’m a total believer in 17min albums. Some bands just make short songs.
Hurry up we’re dreaming by M83 is a double album but there are albums with just as many tracks that aren’t double albums. It must be a length thing?
You can’t measure a double album, it’s a vibe more than anything
Aye. I’m a fan of the more succinct double album. Although they’re few and far between. In the most part double albums are just dumping grounds for bands that have forgotten how to edit themselves.
Big fan of 8-9 track albums nowadays not gonna lie
not having this! most of the music i listen to has more tracks and less duration, or less tracks and more duration!
When you buy a packet of albums and one you already have is in there
Is Drukqs by Aphex Twin classed as a double album or did I imagine that?
