Music industry keeps talking about “superfans” but I think what they actually mean is “fans”. Or is there a difference?
Like, does wearing an Iron Maiden too to an Iron Maiden show, make you a superfan? Does owning every release on a label? Or multiple formats of every album by the same artist?
I think i’m a superfan “of music” rather than particular artists or genres but there are definitely acts I’ve seen 20+ times and own multiple bits of merch by and have listened to an ‘are you sure you’re ok?’ amount of times.
I’m fascinated by the music industry suddenly caring about the people who spend money on being a superfan and going to be writing a bit more about it. In the meantime, I’ve commissioned a few pieces for the Drowned in Sound newsletter and thought some of you might enjoy the first one
liking someone a lot i guess

It’s a very broad definition but I’d say any cooked food with a primarily liquid base. And don’t call me erfan.

I guess I’d think of a ‘superfan’ as one of those people who make the particular artist/band a significant part of their identity. Doubt there’s many about anymore but those Morrissey fans who have the same haircut and glasses for instance.
Always found it an unpleasant experience to talk to someone who is mega into one particular artist - they immediately would turn the chat into a competition. Big time Dylan fans are some of the worst for that in my experience.
