Everything Everything’s The Peaks. Jon’s always been cagey about its meaning but I have always felt it was him singing the end of the world, and it crushes me every time.

And a second Everything Everything pick, Put Me Together, which makes me consider the burgeoning alienation and xenophobia of the last few years, the Other-ising we are constantly doing to ourselves, the double-edged sword of ‘difference’.

Miserable songs are the best and there are way too many to choose from, so I’ll go with the one that’s been in my head all day, The centerpiece and bleakest song on their bleakest album, it’s completely suffocating and devoid of anything resembling hope. The album artwork says it all.

You can listen to this month’s show whenever you like on Mixcloud here:

Best was seeing him live in Studio 2 here in Liv and being part of a room full of neurotic, oversensitive ~30 year olds singing “I am tired, I am afraid” in unison.

Nice positive ending though

Saw him earlier this year but sadly had to leave before he played this one :frowning: (if I’d known it would be one of my last gigs of the year I’d have made alternative arrangements)

Hi All,

To go with the radio show, I’ve decided to do a sad bastard music newsletter. Sign up if you fancy doses of musical melancholy in your inbox every now and then.

‘Holding’ is my Ruins pick

although like most sad songs, I’ve ruined it a fair bit by being too sad

this, though

again, caveat that I’m in such a bad place and have been for a while that I don’t think I can’t get enough

but I have repeat-listened a lot

It’s fucking Baby Birch. Had it on earlier, amazing song, also horrible, feels a bit gross to actually enjoy it. But it’s so good.
