What’s the one menu item that will always be a safe bet

Even if it’s not marvellous it’ll still be ok.

I’m saying pizza.

Had calamari in Lisbon a few weeks ago that was deep fried in cheap donut batter. Grim.

Hunters chicken
Whitebait

Often wildly overcooked imo

Breaded/battered mushrooms. Side of them in the worst conditions is an absolute delight imho.

If I’m at a non-pizza, non-Italian restaurant and pizza is one of things on the menu, I’d assume the pizza will definitely not be a safe bet.

House cheeseburger is often disappointing but it’s usually fine.

Bread while you wait

I got pilloried for saying something similar in the COLC thread, but I think a lot of restaurants have stopped doing free bread while you wait, and the experience of going out for dinner is much the worse for it.

Fish and chips.

Doesn’t matter if the fish is shite - batter, chips and peas are always good.
