probably the whole reason I gave the album a proper shot as a non-swift fan (who has come around somewhat, at least on a clutch of great songs)

OOOFFFT!! Surprised at this! Thought that’d be way higher up.
My first one to go. Great song. Think the Pond Sessions version cemented it as the best song from the Folklore/Evermore period for me.

For a while I didn’t like The 1 as the opening track for the album, really thought it should open with Cardigan. Then it sort of clicked that The 1 is like a present day opening scene to a story told in flashback. I see The 1 being from the perspective of the narrator of Illicit Affairs and August, who had the summer affair with James, and she’s like “yeah that was an interesting time for me, I’m over it now but funny to look back on eh?” and then Cardigan is from Betty’s pov and kind of serves as a rewind to the time and place to these characters’ teenage years. Then Last Great American Dynasty is not part of the story but gives a flavour of the sort of part of the world the story happens in.

this version doesn’t especially stand out for me, but does remind me that I actually like her voice more than I think (either always have, or liking it more as she ages). Surprisingly deep and full, the note she hits for “ricochet” there ooh

I can’t believe the one Taylor Swift song with an Owen Pallett credit on it is a skip song but there it is. Could be good if not for that guys singing, cannot stick it.

love the lines about the waitress and sending presents to her exes babies 
like nearly petty but actually just really sweet, playing with her reputation (which I know she’s done loads but it worked best for me on folklore)
