Sean’s idea/threat of some retrospective activities from the last quarter century sent me spinning back to 2k, for me a big year as I entered college and exploded my musical horizons with DSL and napster for the first time. It’s an era I haven’t gone back to much in the years since so now’s the time, before 2025 starts taking up my ears.
I started this morning with Gas - Pop, which sounds tepid to me through today’s lens. Didn’t feel worth finishing.
Jackie O Motherfucker - Fig. 5 is on now, and holds up better. It’s messy and twangy and human, but the palette is varied and interesting and isn’t locked to any particular era. The drummer seems to have complemented their kit with finds from the local junk shop and the whole thing feels like it was recorded barefoot on a scratchy wool rug.
Loading these up, just two tracks left on my Jackie O but this one’s 24 minutes cause why waste space on a CD when you could fill it with hypnotic jams instead?
I found a list I made 15 years ago and Dongs was second on it after Voodoo:
Arovane - Tides
Broadcast - The Noise Made By People D’Angelo - Voodoo
Gas - Pop
Jackie O Motherfucker - Fig. 5
Matmos - The West
Outkast - Stankonia Smog - Dongs Of Sevotion
The Infesticons - Gun Hill Road
Weakling - Dead As Dreams
Gas has already eliminated itself this go round. JOM can stay for now.
