Singles often get overlooked, albeit not just here, and especially so if they aren’t released as a part of a long play group.

Focus tends to be on rating music in albums rather than song-by-song, even though there are few proper concept records and, at any rate, even fewer songs intended to mainly be considered as a part of a group. Moreover, thanks, in part, to streaming features such as personal playlists and ‘shuffle play,’ we don’t always enjoy music an album at a time or in track order.

Lower Dens - Real Thing

#5

Thanks - will have a listen through these at some points. Other songs that I like that aren’t in the list (I think) are:

Jens Lekman - What’s That Perfume That You Wear?
Aldous Harding - Imagining My Man
Sleep Party People - The Missing Steps
Jarvis Cocker & Chilly Gonzales - Tearjerker
Sir Was - A Minor Life
Einar Stray Orchestra - As Far As I’m Concerned
The Magnetic Fields - Cold Blooded Man

#6

Priests - JJ
Meat Wave - No Light
Afghan Whigs - Toy Automatic
Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever - French Press
The Hand - Get Naked

(or honestly any song off of those albums)

At the Drive-In - Tilting at the Univendor
Grandaddy - Brush with the Wild
Thurston Moore - Cusp
New Pornographers - Play Money
Flaming Lips - One Night While Hunting for Faeries and Witches and Wizards to Kill

#7

Valerie June - Got Soul

#8

Is there a one track per album rule? Because I would go for I Live Now As A Singer off the Julie Byrne album, but both would be good

Others…

Near To The Wild Heart Of Life - Japandroids
Arabian Heights - Afghan Whigs
Kajra Mahobbot Wala - Coldcut x On U Sound (I might have spelled this wrong)
International Space Station - British Sea Power
About That Time - Earthen Sea

#9

Good list! Seems to have been a great year for songs so far.

My suggestion would be ‘Care’ by David Bazan. It’s a really simple, very honest song; I like what he’s saying and I like how he says it. It could have been a mere confessional, but he broadens it to make a plea for us all to take a little more care in the way we conduct our lives.

#10

Ooh I have a few.

Hoops - Burden
Swim Mountain - Wait for Me
Anteros - Drunk
Miami Horror - Trapeze
Nelson Can - Miracle

Impressive selections in the original list however.

#11

The whole Julie Byrne album :ok_hand: But if it’s just one, it’s melting grid. Those swells of harmony

The Courtneys - Minnesota

#16

Songs from July to December?

#17

#18

Flaming lips - How
British Sea power - don’t let the sun get in the way
Elbow - k2

#19

I would go for Elbow - Magnificent (She Says). I know it’s the ‘big single’ but it’s lovely.

#20

I would vote for:

Feist - Century
Vince Staples - Bakbak
Ty Segall - The Only One
Sampha - Blood on Me (single was released in 2016 though, does it still count?)
