I love this. Far better than it has any right to be.

Yes! Someone else who watches this! It’s brilliant, isn’t it? They’ve got the mix just right of silly/stupid/serious/loads of action. Season 2 has been commissioned as well.

been catching up on The Night Of. Didn’t realise it was a US remake of Criminal Justice but it’s pretty good.

Decent article here on waiting for TV shows to get good

http://uproxx.com/sepinwall/it-gets-better-after-six-episodes/

Currently having this with the Leftovers. JFC the first few episodes were awful. I skipped to the end of season 1 and didn’t seem like I missed much story-wise. On to the second season now and don’t feel like continuing after he woke up in the lake, ffs, why is he in a fucking lake now.

I feel like a spoiled asshole for thinking this sometimes, especially when I dropped Fargo S3 very quickly despite loving the first 2 seasons, but I feel like I’m wasting my time when there’s probably something else I’d rather be watching. I’m also not convinced a lot of these ā€œslowburnersā€ are really that good. It may be the difference between weekly viewing vs binge watching: I’m more likely to stick with a show if it’s all available at once, even if it starts slow, while waiting once a week will kill my interest very quickly.

I generally enjoyed Leftovers and thought it had some great moments, but I never thought it was that great and ditch it a few episodes into this last season. I’ve heard great things, but I don’t really have a desire to go back.

It’s the problem with all telly that you don’t watch on a weekly basis. No one has the time to watch an entire series that you have not seen because season four suddenly gets really good.

It’s the reason I’ve not bothered with Breaking Bad, for example.

It’s a remake? Hadn’t realised that at all! It’s properly great though.

Breaking Bad is an example of a show that I think I would’ve found unbearable watching it week to week (I had a similar problem with Better Call Saul), but I found it much easier to watch when I was able to binge watch it. It gets even better towards the end, but it starts out good too. It also helped that the seasons weren’t especially long either.

Breaking Bad was vastly improved by the tension of having to wait between episodes and seasons, I’m pretty sure part of the reason it gets a somewhat underwhelmed reaction from people watching it new now is that they can just blitz through it.

Cliffhangers have absolutely no power whatsoever in the binge-watching age.

eh, true to some degree I guess, it just seems like it was, at least initially, an incredibly slow moving show that could easily turn off some, but the same progress becoming more readily apparent through binge watching.

if anything causes an underwhelming reaction, I’m sure it’s more the sheer hype behind the show now, plus a relatively slow start.

This is it for me.

Taking Breaking Bad as an example, people were raving about it but I sacked it off after the first season because

a) I didn’t think it was that good
b) it wasn’t living up to the hype
c) I wasn’t going to sit through another season before it got good
d) I hated pretty much every single character.

Same thing with Mad Men, I’ve got to S2E3 and sacked it off again because although stylistically it’s fantastic, the plot or characterisation hasn’t grabbed me in anyway, shape or form. I simply don’t care what happens to any of the characters.

In contrast, working my way through West Wing was an absolute joy. Compelling right from the start, the characters (Josh excepted) had me hooked, the plot had me hooked… I know TV has changed a lot in the 15 plus years since WW began, but this is pretty much the yardstick for me when it comes to judging other shows.

yeah it was pretty good

had Ben ā€œQā€ Whishaw in the Riz Ahmed role.

I binged Breaking Bad in about 4 weeks and had a jolly good ride with it. I was in hospital for a chunk of that so couldn’t really do anything else which may have helped.

speaking of American remakes, I might re-watch the original State of Play - remember thinking it was incredible when I watched it about 10 years ago

Friends From College - Not bad, but could’ve been better given the cast. Some of the really negative reviews seem a bit over the top, but there’s a bit too much reliance on cringe humor that comes from the characters acting dumb.

Anyone watched Childhood’s End?

Oooft. Awful.

Just finished a full run-through of Futurama having never seen any of it before. Lovely stuff, always a few laughs here and there and got nice and emotional without being too sappy. Loved Zoidberg’s ending!

Now to (finally) watch S2 of The Returned, finish Search Party and S6 of Seinfeld.

Very jealous. I love how the Nibbler stuff all ties up throughout the series.

Also ā€œJamaican? I thought you were some sort of outer space potato manā€.
