Chessington - only ever went on school trips. Fucking hated rides (still do) so mainly looked at the animals.

when my sister and I visited my Granny Edna in Chorley we would go to a medieval themed place called Camelot

It was pretty rubbish I suspect - but my parents refused to take us to Alton Towers until years later.

Wasn’t it closed for ages because it was disappearing into the sea?

I have photos of my grandparents and me at Blackgang Chine when I was about 5.

we were probably closest to M&Ds, like @epimer, but it was shite and ful of scum so we went to loudon castle theme park instead.

now that’s something i can get behind.

I’ve got a quite shit anecdote about Blackgang Chine. Can’t be arsed to type it.

Can I steal this as my avatar?

I hit up BW last summer. Worst aquarium I have ever been in. So narrow you can’t stop, just a corridor that you gave to keep moving along. Birds were fine.

if you can identify this chap then yes

Camelot near Chorley. I really want to go again, cause it closed like a decade or so ago, and has become overgrown and creepy.

He’s the weather wizard right?

(I’ve been to Blackgang twice this year…)

I went to Forbidden Corner in North Yorkshire recently with some (adult) mates. It was ace. I nearly got knocked out by a swaying metre-high uvula and that was just at the entrance.

Bekonscot Model Village

Not sure that Thorpe Park or Chessington ever counted as second tier parks - they were both fairly primo destinations when I was a kid.

Mine was probably either Bembom Brothers/Dreamland (depending on which year you visited) or Bognor Regis Butlins. Bembom Brothers has the Looping Star rollercoaster and Mary Rose pirate ship that went all the way over, while Butlins had a swimming pool with glass walls and base with a bar underneath it (probably a goldmine for perving I would imagine).

they keep adding bits to it. there’s a bakers there now, a town hall and fish shop in the miners village, and a photography studio. added a masonic hall in the last 10 years too. and they’re building a 1950s village. costs £18 for a yearly unlimited pass.

haven’t been to the photography studio/new town additions, interested to go if/when the 1950s village is opened.

also the tea rooms are horrendous. think i paid about £7 for a plain jacket potato last year.

Wicksteed

Went loads as a kid and saw my first bike gang fight here. Also home of the nearest skate park which you could use if you had something vaguely resembling a helmet on. Safety wasn’t a huge deal back then, a toy army helmet that offered no protection would do.

This (and the Chiltern Open Air Museum) were the closest things to my aunt when I was growing up. Used to love going to Bekonscot, but fear it doesn’t live up to my pre-school memories.
