What's a funny thing about the industry you work / specialise in that other people might not know?

Has anyone ever thought of just making one mega category to house them all under, to save time?

A patentcopymark, if you will

You might want to protect that idea via some sort of patentcopymark lawyer

No, I think I can do it online due to the panny d. I need to prove that I’ve lived in the EU for a continuous ten year period though, which is awkward when your tax records don’t quite go back far enough.

You can confuse people by pretending copyrights, trademarks and patents are different things which makes the job seem more important.

Signed off doesn’t mean signed off. It means you can work on it until they change their mind

despite a huge drop in the number of EU students, overall applications for 2021/22 are up by 8% due to growth in domestic and non-EU applications. people assume it’s gonna go off a cliff because EU, but China is by far the biggest international demographic and India/Nigeria/etc are going to be much bigger markets than the EU in future anyway

also despite their general policies on foreigners (and attitude to int’l students once they arrive, although they have brought back the 2-year post-study visa), the UK government has a target of recruiting 600,000 international students each year in the UK by 2030. i think it’s about 350k at the moment.

Stuff like this, while rare, is much less rare than you’d think:

I’m the Head of Content at a publisher. It is utterly astonishing how many times a manuscript is reviewed, edited, proofread etc and mistakes will ALWAYS find their way through.

Also educational publishers follow ’informal’ ‘Parsnips’ guidelines which detail material that should be avoided. If this stuff gets through it can wreck international sales.

What does this mean?

It’s an acronym for material which should be avoided in published material:
no politics, alcohol, religion, sex, narcotics, -isms or pork

(Can’t remember the other ‘s’)

Depending on the country you sell to, your books can be banned if something slips through the net. I once worked on a primary school maths book where we had to brief the designers illustrating a beach scene to draw long-sleeved t-shirts and trousers on the people in the water because bare arms/legs wouldn’t be allowed in certain countries.

Just the fact that I’ve learned about parsnips alone has made this thread worth it

Don’t get me started on drawing maps in geography books. It’s an absolute fucking minefield.

Maps of minefields would be very useful

All maps should have a north arrow and scale bar.

In my job you can use the terms vibrator, penetration and stiffness without any sexual connotations.

Irks me like no other when I get a site plan with no north arrow.

Mechanics have to supply their own tools. Doesnt matter if a mechanic works at a dealership, or a small village garage; she/he must buy their own stuff, usually including storage. Can cost thousands.
