Watched this one earlier. Love how he starts “I’m Bill Hader and I asked to be on What’s in my Bag”

It’s a good fun series.

Love the Matt Berry one. But the way he slaps down the records made me uncomfortable.

Very much enjoy this series. Big fan of the Full of Hell one.

They’ve been going for 30 years and have over 100 albums I think (!) but a couple of favourites:

Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso UFO

First full album - sets out their sound pretty much from the off. First version of one of their signature tunes Pink Lady Lemonade is on there too (they’ve re-recorded a bunch of times since).

La Novia

AMT always had a bit of a fascination with the Occitan language (as well as other forms of indigenous languages and music) and this one is a mix of heavy psych and Occitan folk (throat) singing. Sounds pretty wanky describing it but it is incredible.

In C

Their cover of Terry Riley’s minimalist classic. They absolutely nail it.

Univers Zen Ou De Zéro À Zéro

My personal favourite by them. Everything that’s great about them together in one record

Pretty impeccable selection in my opinion

One thing I always wonder about is do they get given an amount to spend by the store.

  • The artist gets given carte blanche
  • They’re happy to spend their own cash
  • They get given some credit by the store but some can’t help themselves and end up spending their own dough to get more stuff

I was in Amoeba Records last year and if I didn’t have to cycle back to the hotel and then get a transatlantic flight home I could’ve spent thousands.

Thinking about this now, it doesn’t really make sense. More records in one bag would actually protect each other better than just two flopping around!

Yeah, I ended up spending a fortune in the San Francisco store about 10 years ago. I’m led to believe the LA shop is twice as big. I could spend a day there.

Just makes me want to go to that shop again. been a couple of times, but never quite long enough.

picked up a ‘gentle ben’ cast album there last time so probably not really making the most of it

We went to San Francisco for my 40th a few years ago and my partner bought me a gift card as a present. That was a fun afternoon.

Blimey! It was the SF one I visited too and that was big enough to start with.

One of my best friends moved out to LA for work about 20 years ago. First time I went to out visit him he had to work on a couple of days when I was there. On one of these days he dropped me off outside without telling me where we were going and just said “there you go dude, I’ll pick you up in a few hours!”

first i heard them was live playing this for an hour about 25 years ago. bloody incredible! There’s a lot to check out of varying quality but its all fun, and live they nearly always deliver.

Pink Lady Lemonaded is the tune though. Next level

The LA one used to be absolutely massive, I think it’s since move and I’m not sure it’s as big now. 20 years ago when I used to shop there, you would enter and be hit by the sound of plastic cd cases slapping against each other, as so many people were riffling though the racks.

They used to produce a free zine every 6ish months that contained 5-10 recommendations from every employee from all 3 Ameoba shops. I really miss those, I used to spend hours reading right through them all.

Ah I love these videos - I tell everyone to go watch em, even if it’s bands they don’t know or like. In fact, they’re the best ones! Found so so much stuff through these, it’s amazing just watching people really love an album tell you about how amazing it is. Absolutely ace.

There is a recorded version that’s an hour long, but typically they stuck it away on a compilation

Live is where they are absolutely at their best though, for sure
