just assumed he was cheesy bollocks when I was a silly teenager but he’s gotta be one of the best singers I’ve ever heard

yeah he peetered out and made a lot of very, very average stuff later on. But when he was good he was so great, nearly put superstition into this thread earlier

would also put black coffee and sinnerman up there

Stevie Wonder was on 10/10 form between Music of my Mind (1972) and Original Musiquarium (1982).

100% truth. I’ve just spent the day listening to music I’ve never heard before and I’m floored by how much amazing music there is that I’ll never hear. It’s the best.

saddest breakup song I ever heard

It’s the best breakup record ever made. He’d just gone through a divorce and had a breakdown. Don’t know if you’ve seen this version. It’s probably my favourite live recording of a track. So much pain in every word. It’s an R&B classic (not taking the piss). Someone cleaned up the sound on it but they took it down. Shame.

I still find it painful to listen to tbh, 10 years after I was going through a bad breakup.

yeah I’m just viewing it as a nice way to celebrate great songs now really

LONG DARK BLUES! :heart::heart::heart::heart::heart:

really stopped me in my tracks the first time I heard that song.

And then it only bloody comes back in ‘John Henry…’ That was proper goosebumps that moment. In fact I reckon ‘John Henry’ is also one of the best songs ever written

yeah I love after the ragged intro when it breaks down to just those stark, bold, blocky piano chords

actually hold on magnolia might be better than both of those.

What a record
