Shaun Ryder is a really underrated lyricist, I think. He’s not Leonard Cohen, but quite a lot of his lyrics are cleverer than he is given credit for.

Also, Bummed > Stone Roses.
All down hill after Bummed. Pills Thrills has dated badly in comparison to it.

I’ve a soft spot for Chaosmosis, rather like it when I give it a spin. Was all set to hate it after the first single from it but it’s got some really great songs on it. Def more of a keeper over Beautiful Future, RCB and prob More Light too, which I did love at the time but have hardly played since. Something about the production on it keeps me at bay from truly digging it.

Nah, ‘Pills n Thrills’ still sounds great to me. Although, i even like bits of ‘…Yes Please’!

I think Bummed and Pills and Thrills are both great albums, actually, but I do slightly prefer Bummed which I think is a true classic of its time.

For some reason they are a massively underrated band. It’s probably partly their slightly cartoonish image (partly their fault, partly a creation of middle class southern music journalists) and partly the steepness of their fall.

Two great albums and five or six great singles is better than most people manage in a career. I would also say that when I saw them live in 1989 they were one of the greatest live bands I’ve ever seen.

“Dated badly” is a bit harsh actually. I’ll amend that to “dated a bit for my ears”. Sounds much kinder. I just preferred Bummed so much more and still do. Pills always felt a bit weaker to me even though it had some crackers on it. WFL vibe beats the Step On vibe for me.

The sweet spot is with the remixes of the Bummed singles - best of both worlds.

I saw the Vines at Reading after the first album came out and I thought they were pretty damn good. But yeah, total crap after that and I never saw them play again.

It is true that you can totally date the production on ‘Pills n Thrills’ to 1990. ‘Bummed’, on the other hand, has such an odd sounding production that it is difficult to date it at all.

I would say Kozelek but I thought this about him years ago until he dropped Benji. Maybe he still has it in him. I feel with many others mentioned here, they couldn’t if they tried. He just isn’t trying.

Broken Social Scene - 3 great albums and then everything since has been dire.

Wild Beasts - Two Dancers and Smother suggested they were going to be massive and then those next two albums were cocaine-fuelled dross. I saw them at Brixton Academy after Present Tense and it was embarrasing.

Yeah, i agree, it is much better than the Oakenfold ‘Think About The Future’ Mix which is normally considered the best.

I love 'Yes Please. There’s about 5 killer tunes on it and a few other decent ones. imo there’s only a couple of proper duffers and there’s not a massive gulf in quality between ‘YP’ and ‘Pills…’ Bummed is one of my favourite ever records, an oddly timeless album.

He’s brilliant at times. I absolutely love the lyric to ‘Country Song’ from ‘bummed’. What can sound like jibberish on first listen eventually creeps under your skin and suggests something a lot heavier and darker. It’s not obvious though which makes it more disturbing.

Agree with ^this. Feel that a lot of the negative reviews at the time were more due to the music press falling out of love with the whole Mondays carnival rather than the quality of the album itself…
