yeah, happens in ‘real life’ too, but I think there’s something about the permanency of content on the internet, and how jilted communicating on it is as opposed to a normal conversation, that people tend to view opinions that aren’t in agreement with theirs as personal attacks. leading to the doubling down etc.

this isn’t a criticism of here btw, dis is great for putting a lid on this.

Personally, I think it’s easy when you are arguing online to get carried away with the argument and treat it like an abstract thing to be defeated rather than something that came from a person and people’s ways of dealing with conflict and perceived differences can be tied into lots of things like their sense of self-worth or bad experiences in their youth/feeling like they can’t be seen as stupid or a failure etc.

Then you get that awful realisation later that you were arguing with a person and not an abstract point :frowning:
