Didn’t that kind of end it though? I think there was a couple of years prior to 2001 when the U.K. were considered to have no terrorist threat

Apologies for massively simplifying Irish political history though

I’ve said it a few times but 2004 is comfortably the best football England have played in a tournament in my lifetime (comfortably better than 2018 or 1996) and definitely the one where we really could have won with the quality of our squad and the comparative shite around the rest of the tournament.

A couple of brainfarts against France and then the Rooney injury against Portugal (plus obviously penalties) and so on and so forth

It was the last ā€˜big’ incident I believe yeah.

but Brazil losing 7-1 to Germany happened after that, which was amazing and fun?

also remember when Jesse Lingard made us all believe again?

probably the ā€œalternative national anthemā€ bit in Human Traffic

When Yasuaki Kagami bought his controlling shares in 2008 and went after getting us on the stadium list for England’s doomed 2018 World Cup list.

he did, he made us all believe again

everybody was like, there it is, Jesse Lingard is finally here on the biggest stage, and England are going to ride his coattails to World Cup glory

While the English thought they had already won the tournament, the Dutch just shrugged and proceeded to the next round. No big deal.

One year later …

But the public reaction to Diana’s death was the 1st moment I thought ā€œhmmm maybe this country really is brokenā€
