Yeah but 15 year olds are idiots, so a lot of people who are doing what 15 year old them thought was a good idea will be stuck in the sunk cost fallacy by now.

wanted to be in a band, have a “record deal”, go on tour and do everything that goes along with that

did all of it by the time i was in my mid-20’s and went a bit nuts in the process, wouldn’t change it though

When I was 15 I spent all of my time playing CM 01/02, now I am an adult who spends all of his time “playing” the same game…

(This is ignoring the daft bit where I decided I wanted to work in the film industry and geared all of my educational decisions towards that before dropping out of a degree course for it after one year)

My colleague was a lab scientist and moved into consultancy. His wife is a lab scientist too, and they’ve moved to Heidelberg for her to continue her career out there (because it’s practically impossible here) and he’s working remote.

My brother is a physicist, and was a physics teacher for a while too. The big talent siphon in physics is the financial sector. It used to be that over half of all physics graduates went to work in the City, and that City firms preferred physics graduates above those who’d studied maths, economics or business at university. These days I think it’s about a fifth of all physics graduates heading that way, but it’s still the largest individual destination sector.

It’s still absurd to me that I can make a career out of knowing how to look up legal stuff and making pendantic technical arguments much more easily than my ability to turn petrochemicals into life saving drugs.

I hadn’t the foggiest. Used some career programme at school and it recommended either high court judge or golf greenskeeper which just added to the confusion. Had convinced myself I wasn’t clever enough to do anything academic. Guess the dream was to work in a record store with no customers, where I just sat around listening to music and talking shit with the other employee, though the iPod revolution was already rendering that Gen X career model obsolete

It also means that careers fairs in physics are just full of these City slickers trying to recruit you. Especially in London unis. Not great.

I was certain that I was going to do something art/design based. I loved, and was pretty good at, drawing and painting (got an A in my art A-Level in the end). I even spent some time doing an internship at a graphic design company that specialise in designing album covers.

That ambition was crushed when I was unexpectedly rejected from art college. I then accidentally became a town planner.

I wanted to be an architect, so chose physics, maths and art. Got quickly bored of the first two subjects and more interested in art and design, so did an art foundation course and now I’m a graphic designer.

Still work in medical research just not in a lab, so I guess I stayed true to my 15 year old self. I’m fine with that, can’t imagine not working in this field in some way or another.
